Anirudh Chandrasekar

Post by Dinesh »

Anirudh and VSP seemed to have split after having a great year (3 CH titles) as Ani is playing with Bart Stevens (NED) at the Metz ATP 250 this week, while VSP and Jeevan are playing in a Finnish challenger.

Anirudh/Bart won their first round match against local pair of Arribage/Sanchez 6-3 6-4.

This win pushes Anirudh to a top-90 spot (#86 to be exact) in the doubles rankings.

Starting this thread, since at the age of 25, he is now our 4th best doubles player and will potentially have a long career with numerous partners as a doubles specialist.

Too early to say that Ani and VSP have split. Aniruddh's doubles rankings is higher, so he got an opportunity to get into ATP tournament this week and he took it. Bart Steven was a quarter finalist at Wimbledon this year. So, great for Aniruddh to be getting to play with him.

Worth noting that VSP and Jeevan already planned to enter the Finnish challenger (entry list comes out on Tuesdays of previous week) while Bart and Anirudh probably signed in as alternates after Bart’s partner JP Smith withdrew his initial commitment. VSP/Jeevan are playing in another challenger next week, as well.

Anyway, Bart and Anirudh lost to Doumbia/Reboul 6-2 6-4 today.

Having made the Girona Challenger final, Anirudh is ranked 106 in the live rankings (vs a career high of 87), his partner David Vega Hernández is ranked 127 (with a career high of 28 a decade ago; David is 30 years old now). One wonders what is attractive about this partnership for Anirudh: perhaps clay specialisation for his partner. For David, this is his 3rd Challenger doubles final in the past 12 months -- and one of the other two (in Manacor, Spain, on a hard court at the end of August last year) was also partnering Anirudh.
Last week, Anirudh/David made the SF in Murcia, but David had also made the SF (with a Japanese partner) in his previous two Challengers.

Anirudh's most fruitful partnerships of the period since he and VSP parted ways have been with fellow-Indians. He won the Villena (Spain) Challenger on hard court with Niki (Oct'24), made the SF of the ATP Newport (grass) with Arjun Kadhe (Jul'24), and won the Oeiras (Portugal) Challenger on clay also with Arjun. Before that, he partnered VSP consistently for nearly half a year, making the QF of ATP Dallas and ATP Houston, and the final of the Quimper (France, hardcourt) Challenger -- all in the early part of 2024. This year, he won the Bangalore Challenger partnering Ray Ho of Taiwan. So no real pattern of success with a particular partner, but perhaps he will get together with Arjun Kadhe again once the latter returns from injury.

Anirudh won his 7th challenger title today at Girona 100 challenger in Spain with David Vega Hernandez of Spain.

His first 3 challenger titles in 2023 came with VSP. 2 titles in 2024 came with 2 different Indian partners- Arjun Kadhe and Niki Poonacha and this year's 2 titles have come with foreign partners - Ray Ho and David Vega Hernandez.

And with that he is back in top 100, being ranked #100 in live rankings.
