And these Asian championships and Asian games ( not national events) count towards world rankings but not for world tour finals. After this week, SatChi will be ranked #2 in world rankings. It is ironic that world's second ranked pair will be not playing in the world tour finals.
Agree as that is what I meant. Events in which you are primarily representing the nation, such as Olympics, Asian Games, Thomas Cup etc.

7th seeded pairing of Ashwini Ponappa and Tanisha Crasto upset our 4th seeded pairing of Tresa Jolly and Gayatri Gopchand easily in QF. Must say Tresa-Gayatri are coming back after some break due to injury to one of the players. But, if this continues, Ashwini-Tanisha pair will seriously challenge to overtake Tresa-Gayatri pair for our womens doubles spot at Paris Olympics. Lets see.

Tanisha and Ashwini win the low level Guwahati 100 event - they will likely be at WR #25 come Monday and very close to Treesa/Gayatri who are at 19.

In the Race to Paris, they will be at the 23rd spot ahead of Treesa/Gayatri who will fall down to 26. This is good healthy competition here, and both pairs are going to play the low level Odisha masters this coming week.

Looks like Tresa-Gayatri pulled out from this week in Odisha. Looks like some injury issue with them of late, have played in very few tournaments. Tanisha and Ashwini have made it to the SF here. Tanisha is also in mixed doubles semi finals along with Dhruv Kapila.

One Indian also in SF in both womens singles and mens doubles. Krishna Prasad Garaga and Sai Prateek have made it to SF in mens doubles and 16 year old Unnati Hooda has made it to the Womens singles SF. While we have been debating about Unnati being in same class as Saina/Sindhu, it does seem that as of now she is already second best player in India. She is currently India #5 but has beaten Ashmita Chaliha and Aakarshi Kashyap who are India #4 and #2 respectively and Aakarshi is ranked 40. So, I think when she full year of schedule at this level, Unnati can get to top 30 level within a year. Need to see how much more progress she makes after that.

Unnati lost 16-21 5-21 against former world champion Okuhara in SF at Odisha Masters.

Mens singles final will be an all Indian one, 18 year Ayush Shetty took revenge for his loss in the semi final of junior world championships and beat junior world champion Farhan Alwi of Indonesia. Ayush will meet 22 year Satish Karunakaran in final.

We have 1 representatives in each of the 3 doubles finals. Tanisha in both womens doubles and mixed doubles finals along with Ashwini and Dhruv Kapila. Krishna Prasad Garaga and Sai Prateek are in mens doubles finals.

While Unnati is establishing herself as our #2, her performance against higher ranked foreign players has been quite poor. This could also be psychological. She needs to improve her game considerably against better players before being considered a contender at the world level.

We have finally had a good week in this 3 week Indian series with 5 finalists.

Ashwini/Tanisha will be in the top-20 (19th as per my calc) in the Race to Paris if they win the finals and start building up a significant lead over Treesa and Gayatri. A win will move them up one spot in the world rankings to 23 (still behind Treesa/Gayatri who would stay at 19).

Unnati will move up to India #4 after this but still outside the top-50 which was her goal for the year. Tomoka Miyazaki is the top-ranked age compatriot who is ranked 39th having played 9 events vs Unnati's 15 so the gap is still wide.

A win for Ayush would be great and send him just outside the top-100. Priyanshu and Kiran George have been disappointments in this Indian series. I was hoping to see Priyanshu do what Ashwini and Tanisha have done - 3 finals in a row.

TLDR of the Indian series has been the emergence of Ashwini and Tanisha as a genuine top-25 WD pair though this is Ashwini's Indian summer and she likely doesn't have a lot of peak seasons left in her. Tanisha is only 20 and we should after Paris find a long-term partner for her. Our second rung MS and WS players are unfortunately not very good and we are still dependent on the veterans (Prannoy, Sindhu, Srikanth) and hope for Lakshya to turn his form around.

We had a conversation about the federations. This 3-week series in India during an Olympic qualification cycle is a great initiative. And we will have the India Open right after the holidays in early Jan. It has given at the least Tanisha and Ashwini a great run of tournaments to break into the top-16 for the Olympics. Obviously the likes of Treesa/Gayatri and Priyanshu also had that opportunity which they haven't taken.

I see that there are more than 2 each from Japan, Korea and China above them in race to Paris rankings and only 2 are allowed to take part provided both are in top 8. So, I think Tanisha-Ashwini are already above Paris olympics qualification cut off unless I missed something.

Unfortunately both Ayush and Ashwini/Tanisha lost. Tanisha did win with Dhruv in the XD after a long match and I am assuming was tired for the WD finals on the same day.

Dhruv and Tanisha seem like a good pair (they beat the WR #23 in the finals here) but it is a bit late for them to make a run to qualify for Paris - they have only played 3 tournaments so far and will have to play qualifiers to enter most tournaments.

Tanisha should focus on qualifying in WD.

Only 16 pairs in the Olympics and the lower-ranked Canadian and the Australian pairs will get the continental quota spot.

You can see the current rankings here

After this week, they will go past the Bulgarian pair and be in a qualification spot but it is all very tight. Both Ashwini/Tanisha and Treesa/Gayatri will need good results in the first few months of 2024 to qualify.
