The men's final against Japan is at 4pm IST on 6th October! Go, Team India!

The women's 0-4 defeat to China in the SF was disappointing. A couple of goals by India off PCs were disallowed (which might have made it 2-2 and changed the tide). I wasn't quite sure why that happened -- apparently PC hits must hit the board, not the net (they are deemed dangerous play if the latter happens :( ).

Slow start in the Asiad men's hockey final. India up 1-0 at half-time against Japan. Need a couple more goals to stamp our authority on the match.

India are 3rd in the world men's outdoor hockey rankings. Australia are 6th, which I find tough to believe, given how much difficulty we have had against Australia over the past 47 years.
Japan are 15th, Pakistan 16th, so the 10-2 result against Pakistan was apt. The 1-0 half-time lead over Japan is a bit disappointing, as was the 4-2 scoreline in the pool match against them (4-0 until 50 minutes was more appropriate...). Malaysia are 10th and Korea are 12th in the world rankings, but the former crashed out at the pool stage. Korea duly won the bronze by beating 22nd-rank hosts, China, 2-1 in the play-off today. That reversed China's shock 3-2 victory over Korea in the pool stage.

India up 3-0 now in the hockey final, after a couple of penalty corner conversions by Harmanpreet Singh and Amit Rohidas. We are still only in the 3rd quarter. Another 15 minute quarter to play, but this is a comfortable lead.

Update: final quarter coming up. India still lead 3-0, and continue to dominate play. Need to keep pressing!

Abhishek scores, and India go 4-0 up with 8 minutes left in the match. Olympic place nearly assured, along with the gold medal. Now, finish well guys!

Update: And we aren't finishing well. Japan score to make it India 4, Japan 1.

Glorious unbeaten campaign in the Asian Games hockey competition for India at Hangzhou. A 5-1 victory in the final -- plus the 10-2 thrashing of Pakistan in the league phase -- made this a truly pleasing campaign for Indian hockey.

We are also assured of a spot at the Paris Olympics. Now we can concentrate on preparing well for Paris, by playing as much as possible (without giving away our secret recipes) in Europe over the next few months.

Very pleasing finish to a tournament which we dominated, apart from a short period in Q2 of the semi.

Standards in Asia are falling generally. Korea were always going to be our biggest threat followed by Malaysia. The former have an ageing squad (including two 39 yr olds) the latter are even worse than us under pressure! Korea also lacks the funding required to compete at the top level.

Pakistan are as dumb as we were from 1980-2012 or so. Idiotic decisions on coaches, selections and of course, corruption. They have the most potential but with the current idiots in PHF, we should be thrashing them for years. About time we redressed the years of beating we got from them.

We are not totally exempt from crazy decision making by the guys in charge. Just look at women's team. Failed coach, poor fitness of players, crazy selections, no PC dragflicker etc

ssp, your thoughts on who should be dropped from this team and who should be brought in for the next big tournament? I always enjoy those. But, the win seems to have moderated you.

Hardik. was exceptional..What a midfielder he is... Good decision to bring him back along with Abhishek.... I feel Tokyo hero Simranjit and Dilpreet needed in the team

Lalit Upadhyay is probably the one player who could be dropped from this side -- if a suitable replacement exists. He often messed up moves, even in the match against Pakistan. Not too many others in this side showed the old afflictions.

The 0-4 loss to China in women's hockey is pretty catastrophic, as we are ranked 7th in the world, well ahead of China (10), Japan (11), S Korea (12). The 4th place finish in the Tokyo Olympics was hard-earned, but we have squandered that in the past 15 months sadly.

A tournament win is the best way to stop my rants! Always

Our selections are still stupid. The competition here could not really expose our weak players.

First player I would drop would be Mandeep (most of you might have guessed that). He may have scored several goals here, but he is nowhere as good as Karthi Selvam. Mandeep's is good at falling over or getting dispossessed in the D or mis trapping. Lalit needs to be 'retired'. Pawan Rajbar or Shilanand Lakra (who has disappeared from the scene) are miles better. Shamsher should be replaced by Simranjeet. Gurjant has been ok, but I'd prefer Dilpreet. Amit Rohidas can be a liability with his rash tackling, although he has improved recently. Varun Kumar seemed unfit prior to the Asian Games.

I expect none of the above will happen. Instead, Akashdeep will be back and outstanding players like Abishekh and Sukhjeet will be dropped.
