BWF tournaments July 2023

Post by Sin Hombre »

Canada - PVS and Lakshya
US - PVS
Korea - everyone is playing including a return from injury for Treesa/Gayatri and Dhrun/Arjun
Japan open - TBD

In Canada, PVS is seeded 4th and won a routine 1st round. Lakshya was unseeded and beat his age contemporary, 2nd seeded Vitidsarn 21-18, 21-15. This is probably his best win this season and hopefully he can capitalize on this and go all the way.

Yes, that is an excellent win for Lakshya. He has been showing improvement in recent weeks after a slide for few months.

Now the tournament is his to lose. He doesn't have any tough opponents till the semis and after that the opponents are beatable. The draw has opened up beautifully for him.

Good win for Lakshya. He's had a few good wins in the last few months but has generally not been able to follow them up besides making the SF at the Thailand Open. Hopefully, he can have a deep run here....

Lakshya Sen beats Y. Coelho (BRA, 58) 21-15, 21-11 in 2nd round to make QF of Canada Open.

Looks like a deep run is process...

Sindhu also gets a w/o to make the QF.

Good luck to both in QFs!

Both Sindhu and Lakshya are thru to the SF. Sindhu with a dominant 21-13 21-7 win against 45th ranked Chinese Gao Feng against whom she had 0-3 record so far and Lakshay with a 21-8, 17-21, 21-10 win over 62nd ranked Belgian.

In the semi finals, 19th ranked Lakshya is up against 11th ranked Japanese Kenta Nishimoto while 15th ranked Sindhu plays world #1 Akane Yamaguchi against whom she has a 14-10 positive record though.

Lakshya beats Nishimoto to make the finals. Sindhu loses to Yamaguchi in the SFs.

Lakshya plays 10th ranked S. F. Li of China in the final. :goodluck:

Great to see Lakhsya reach his first final since 2022 All England open. Hope he now wins his first title since Nov 2022 India open. He is up against his junior compatriate Li Shi Feng against whom he has a 4-2 record.

Lakshya wins his 2nd Super 500 title and the first abroad. Good to see Lakshya find his target. What is heartening is that he beat 3 higher ranked players along the way. Hope his troubles are behind him and we see him reaching the top 5 soon. I didn't watch the match so not sure if he has added some weapons. He was primarily a retriever earlier. This increases India's chances of having 2 men's singles players in the Olympics draw.

Nice work from Lakshya beating 3 top-10 players to win this. Both him and Prannoy will be in the top-5 in the race to Paris next week but long way to go. Ideally we want both of them to be a top-8 seed in Paris.

I also haven't seen the match, but the ESPN match report mentions couple of 400 km + smashes from Lakshya one which is at 420 km i hear.
https://www.espn.in/badminton/story/_/i ... -win-title
In that case i think he would be among top in smash speed at the moment. From what i remember Lee chong Wei's smashes were in the range of 410.

Lakshya starts with a very easy 21-8 21-16 win over 55th ranked player in first round.

Good news today is 19 year old Sankar Muthusamy who is ranked 80 upset 8th seed Nhat Ngyuen of Vietnam ranked 32. Muthusamy was a world junior runner up I think 2-3 years back. It will be great if he is beginning to take the next step now on mens tour.

With Lakshya and Praiyanshu Rajwat it would mean good team developing on mens side even as some others who were top 20 level earlier like Sai Praneeth and Sameer Verma are showing permeant decline.
