Indian team gears up for the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2023

The tournament served as a good preparation for the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2023, as they faced several world-class teams like Germany, New Zealand, Malaysia, and Pakistan.

“The team has performed well,” Indian junior men’s team Coach CR Kumar said, before adding, “However, I wouldn’t call it satisfying because there are some things we could have done better.”

“We will now return to Bangalore and use the weeks leading up to the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2023 to improve and sharpen the areas we identified during this performance in Johor Bahru. This tournament also provided us with insight into the performances of other teams that will compete in the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2023, and we will plan our strategies accordingly,” he added.

"We will give added emphasis to our circle entry and conversion rates. Our primary focus will revolve around applying the insights and tactics that we obtain from our rigorous practice sessions, in our games," he emphasised. While talking about his experience of playing in the Sultan of Johor Cup, held in Malaysia, where India won a bronze medal, Amandeep said, "I have learned a lot from them about how to play, and I would like to utilize this experience in the upcoming World Cup."

We identified chinks in our armour and worked on them, says Lakra ahead of FIH Junior WC

The tournament will be held from December 5 to 16, with India starting their campaign against South Korea in a Pool C match on the opening day!

"We have had a fantastic preparatory camp. We identified chinks in our armour and worked on them to cover all aspects of our game.

"Each and every one of us has worked extremely hard and there's great camaraderie in the camp. I will give this tournament my all and hopefully contribute significantly to winning the Junior World Cup," Lakra said in a Hockey India release.

4-2 win v Korea.

Good 1st half and then inexplicably poor in 2nd half.

Usual, classic Indian traits were on display. Dribbling for no reason, poor passes and trapping, zero outcomes from circle penetrations, giving away PCs (and of course, conceding off these) and picking up cards. Korea packed their defence and we didn't seem to have many ideas to break them down. Against this type of defence, getting PCs is the best way to score, but we seemed incapable of finding a convenient foot in their D.

On this showing, those silly comments from the coaches and players are just bull***t. We're going to run into Belgium or Netherlands in the QF and if we don't improve, we'll be beaten easily, just like Germany did (6-3) in the recent SOJC semifinal and before that in a 4 nation tournament (6-1).
