Fide world cup 2023, Azerbaijan

Basically a froum to cover chess now that we seem to have sufficient interest in the game.

Praggna is in the top-20. The difference between his Rapid ELO rating and his classical one is more than that of Carlsen's. So, maybe Carlsen has a slightly better chance. But, Pragg is playing on dope (not literally) this tournament. So, let's hope he pulls off another Houdini soon.

And, Carlsen is an even better blitz player. So, hope Pragg can pull off one in the Rapids ...

Thankfully the word game exists, so I can call it correctly a game and not a sport. :p

Yes, as we go to rapid and then to blitz, Carlsen's difference with Pragg becomes more. So, I had expected this. Anyway, I think Gukesh is still slightly more talented. But, if the U-20 quartet develop, we will have a good base to work off.

When is the team event next? In a month or so, right?

Pragg is a much better rapid player than his rating, he just hasn't played enough tournaments. This is true for most of the younger lot, but especially true for Pragg, he played at a 2750+ level in rapid in the online tour last year including very good results against Magnus.

As for this tournament, Fabi finishing 3rd is very good news for Gukesh.

This means Fabi is already allocated a Candidate spot through the WC. There are 2 other spots that are available through the FIDE circuit which Fabi is leading as well as rating which he is also leading.

Now, for FIDE circuit, Gukesh is 2nd though Anish is a close 3rd and will go past him because his lowest tournament score is really low so Gukesh needs one more big tournament before the end of the year.

As for the rating spot, it will be hard to catch Nakamura and Alireza but if they qualify through the Grand Swiss, that spot will also be in Gukesh's radar.

Overall, with Fabi finishing 3rd, Gukesh now has a 20%+ chance imo to secure a Candidate spot.
