Since Rutuja too joined here in Tunisia from this week at a new place other than Monastir it seems opening a thread for this.

At W25 La Marsa, Tunisia (Hard)

[R1] Sahaja Yamlapalli (IND,440) vs. (5) Anastasia Kulikova (FIN,341)

Nice upset for Sahaja!

She will play a Tunisian wildcard or a Gwrman qualifier in the R2 on Wednesday. Rutuja's R1 match is tomorrow.

^^^ I was just about to post that, too. Was excited seeing Sahaja pulled that surprise one. IIRC Kulikova beat Raina in India last year. Good win (albeit serving 7 DFs!).

How many aces? What % of first serve points and second serve points did she win? The idea is that if you are getting enough aces and getting first serve points, then taking the risk to hit a better second serve even knowing that some will result in double faults may be okay.

^^^ Agree with the thought. But she doesn't serve too many aces, which is why we complain. Typically it is 1 ace every couple of matches, and that is it. She had one ace today. Her first serve is not super strong or anything, which is why I keep complaining about her double faults. If you are trying to serve hard and make some DFs, I can understand somewhat. That is not her case. She just throws in some wild second serves sometimes - like 3 feet out or a soft serve into the net, from momentarily losing concentration or something (but I have not seen her since Georgia - where she didn't do this like earlier in the year, and looked a tad bit better to me). She just needs to get the damn ball in, because she has the game to dominate after that anyway.

But then again DFs are a problem with a whole lot of players in women's tennis. Not just Indians.

Thanks for the explanation. Are there matches where she does not serve as many DFs? How do the points won on 2nd serve look like in those matches vs this? I know I am being pedantic. But, would be interesting to see if she tries to do more on her 2nd serve when she is losing more points off it or not. But as you say, that is most possibly not the case.

In the present series in Georgia and now Tunisia, Sahaja has beaten players ranked 264, 337 and now 330 and in 3 of last 4 weeks has only lost to eventual champion or runner up. So, she has been playing quite well probably top 300 level or at least close to it. That is good after a period of 3-4 months before that where she lost to quite a few lower ranked players.

Sahaja's match is starting. No double faults in her first service game. A good sign :)

No double faults in the first two service games by Sahaja, as she raced to a 4-0 lead. Then almost none in the third service game too. But right at the first BP on her, at AD out, she served her first double fault - and got broken. Come on Sahaja, stop thinking too much and making it tough on yourself. Just play your game and get your serves across - and you will beat all these players without any trouble.

Anyway, no issues. Sahaja broke again and served off the first set. 61 00.

Update: No problems, and no further DFs at all.

[R2] Sahaja Yamalapalli (IND,440) d. (Q) Anja Wildgruber (GER,1105), 61 62

Nice shellacking there from Sahaja. Good job. One more player into QFs (seven Indians in various places this week, I think).

I think Sahaja breaks into the top-400 for the first time with that win.

Facing a similar ranked Russian instead of the slated 2nd seeded opponent at the QF stage is a blessing. Hope she takes advantage of it now.
