Women’s ITF - Korea W25s - May/June 2023

Post by Dinesh »

There are 3 W25 tournaments in Korea starting this week. Vaidehi is in main draw and Shrivalli Rashmikaa is in the qualifying list. They both have signed up to play in the doubles draw (alternates list).

Shrivalli has won her Q1 and Q2 matches in 3 sets. Final qualifying round match is currently being played. My first time watching her play. She has got a solid first serve and an aggressive style of play but struggles to keep consistency, slightly similar but better than Sahaja I’d say.

Started with a break of her opponent but has served 2 DFs already in her first service game. Hope she’s able to qualify for MD. SRB won the first set 6-2. She raced to a 5-0 lead before letting her Korean opponent gain a couple of games and looked trouble looming while serving at 5-2 0-30, but managed to close it out. One more set, please!

Women’s ITF - Korea W25s - May/June 2023

Great job by 8th seeded 21-year old Shrivalli Bhamidipadi (IND,758) to qualify in! It is never easy to beat Koreans in Korea...

[Q1] d. Gyeong Seo Lee (KOR,1199), 75 67(2) [10-6]
[Q2] d. Eunji Lim (KOR,ITF-819), 46 61 [10-3]
[Q3] d. (9) Eunhye Lee (KOR,806), 62 64

In the main draw,

[R1] Vaidehi Chaudhari (IND,492) vs (2) Kyoka Okamura (JPN,274)
[R1] (Q) Shrivalli Bhamidipadi (IND,758) vs (7) Ya-Hsuan Lee (TPE,377)

Fully agree. I have seen so many times Indians getting beaten by much lower ranked foreign players in their country, particularly so in Korea.

So, these were really good wins by Shrivalli.

Tough draw though for both Vaidehi and Shrivalli in main draw first round.

Vaidehi took the first set 6-1 against the second seed! Playing very steady tennis. Except for a volley shot in the final game, there was nothing super-aggressive or anything that she was doing. Just playing smart, steady, mistake-free tennis. Okamura, on the other hand, has been a total mess today, making unforced errors left and right. Vaidehi had BPs on all three of her service games, and converted 2 of 3. She hardly took many points off Vaidehi either. Keep it up, Vaidehi!!!

Vaidehi was up 2 breaks at 61 30, but then had an epic service game where she saved 6 BPs, but she fell at the 7th BP. This was the first game where she made a few errors, and Okamura got a bit aggressive too. Vaidehi needs to watch it here. 63 31... Well, she broke the japanese yet again, at 30-40 on a DF. Now 4-1 and serving, up two breaks again. Vaidehi holds at 15, with some more errors from Okamura. 61 51. And Vaidehi breaks once more at the second MP at AD out, and that is a match. Great upset win!

[R1] Vaidehi Chaudhari (IND,492) d. (2) Kyoka Okamura (JPN,274) 61 61

Excellent upset win by Vaidehi. I watched the last few games, Okamura was making a lot of errors, but in the middle of the second set seemed to have raised her game and was playing some aggressive tennis. But, importantly at that point Vaidehi played some really good points and than Okmuara again started making mistakes towards the end.

Very impressive indeed! May she keep the wins coming, against a qualifier in R2 for starters.

7th seed proved too strong for Shrivalli.

[R1] (Q) Shrivalli Bhamidipadi (IND,758) l. (7) Ya-Hsuan Lee (TPE,377) 36 06

She got a tough draw after qualifying in with 3 good wins against local players. Anyway, at least she gets 1 point for getting into main draw.

Next,

[R2] Vaidehi Chaudhari (IND,492) vs (Q) Yunjin Ahn (KOR,958)

Vaidehi having a tough one against Korean qualifier who does not look anything like 900+ ranked player.

Vaidehi made comeback twice, first from 2-5 down to take it to tie break and than again in tie break from 2-5 down to 5-5 but lost crucial next 2 points to lose the first set 67(5).

Unfortunately, Vaidehi could not capitalise on her big upset in first round. :-(

Yeah, I don't know what has gotten into Yujin Ahn suddenly. She beat #433 Imazaki 75 64 too, to make the SF today. Vaidehi ran into a hot player who seems to running down and returning every shot correctly at Incheon. It happens :( ... Three of the 4 semifinalists there are Q or LL. That is strange.

It seems Shrivalli withdrew from the qualifying list for the W25 in Goyang, Korea, this week :( ... Wjy is it that our pllayers just cannot continue once they have 3 or 4 good matches in a row?...

So only Vaidehi is expected in Korea this week. That is unless Soha Sadiq has reached there, as she is listed as the first ALT into qualifying and should make it if she has gone there.
