Rahul Gandhi disqualification

As we had often come back to discussing economic benefits/impact of sports I thought it was about time for an economic discussion forum.

I remember the brouhaha when Mani S Aiyer called Modi a “neech.” Really? That’s against the law?

Second, the silliness where it’s illegal to call leaders names is absurd. It also extends to “respecting” the flag. Another useless pretentious feel good law.
I would. I have moved to Germany. The temperature here is slightly less colder than where I was in PA in the winter and slightly colder in the summer. Of course, Germany is not in Scandanavia. But, for the first time in 25 years or whatever, I do not own a car and am very happy. I hate driving. I have not felt the need to own a car. I go everywhere in public transport and the trains are just sumptious. At the end of the day, *my* quality of life is perhaps better based on my preferences (not saying it will be so for everyone: whoever enjoys owning guns, driving, etc. will not enjoy things here). Healthcare is a mixed bag. There is more bureaucracy with the insurance companies, etc. and maybe some of the doctors are not as diligent but getting meds and getting to see specialists, and other doctors has been a tad easier here. Given all these, I do not really mind paying the higher taxes. Maybe my car ownership costs itself pays for a chunk of the extra tax I pay. I think the retirement benefits here are also better.

Now, wrt frigid temperatures, I went from Kolkata to Austin, TX to Bay Area, CA to PA. When I came to PA, I would not walk long from December to early May. Eventually, I got used to long walks say up to -12 degrees. If you have the right clothing, live in houses with good insulation, etc., the frigid temperatures - you get used to.

Having said that, absolutely, I would love to stay where it is nice and moderate wrt climate and sunny. But, life is about compromises. You take the quality of life and the costs you pay for it and see if using your metrics, it is better for you and you decide on whether you should move or not. I would give the Nordic states a try if I get a chance. Not saying I will like it on the balance but I do not see it as that much of out of the question.

And, we have gone off topic. I don't know if we have a general thread. Maybe move the non-RG stuff there ...

^^^ Not a permanent move to Germany, right? Won't you miss Uncle Sam when you have no car and public transportation is nil with worker strikes? ... Oh wait, that is happening right now! :)

Hey, I am from Bengal. Strikes are holidays! :-) Yes, not a permanent move to Germany ... yet ;-) I can actually rent a car for a day or so if I absolutely have to go but I am conveniently in India right at this moment. I did have to rent a car in the Canary Islands. But, otherwise, I've not had to use one for all my 10 months till date. :-) To be fair, Uncle Sam has his advantages as does India as does Germany. And, each has its problems. My point is that I would not mind living in Scandinavia.

As I have said, Disqualification of Rahul Gandhi will led to revival of Congress party!!! Congress wins Karnataka election. Local factor plays some role...but disqualification of RaGa is the key which led to whole cascade of momentum in favour of Congress!!!!!

I guess we will come to know what the factors were. But, I think you can only BS people for so long that you are an economic genius. At the end of the day, people can be fooled once, people can also give someone a long rope, but when you fail to deliver, you meet the same fate - kicked out. I think economic issues were more the reason in Karnataka than some freedom of speech issue. Its bribes and populist schemes were confusing and the government was corrupt to the core making tons of money in kickbacks. Karnataka is also not the Hindu belt and thus the anti-Muslim schemes did not buy them anything. All in all, a poorly performing government was booted out. Nothing to do with RG.

Removing muslim reservation is not anti-muslim......it is one of the basis of formation of Pakistan....our constitution doesn't allow.....bjp just followed constitution!

Problems are many. You utter a word against the lord almighty and you are put behind bars, called an anti national. These jokes won't last.

Btw, there is a big gap between a state election and national elections. In Delhi Aap wins 95% of state assembly seats and none in the Lok Sabha.

People think differently for state and lok sabha elections. This bjp government in Karnataka was no good. And the results reflect that. Nothing more.

Karnataka has voted against the incumbent every time for 40 years. It is better not to read too much into this, beyond that. Karnataka has some of the most corrupt politicians in India (and this has been the case for a long time too). BJP government was as corrupt or more as the previous ones, so people voted them out. Kannadigas are dying to get a government that is not corrupt, and hoped BJP would be the answer, but politicians are the same on both sides in Karnatka in the end. So people never get their wish, and they will keep voting against the incumbents.

On the other hand, one could make a case that BJP did have a chance to reverse the trend, despite the corruption issues. They were simply stupid. A lot of arrogant pro-Hindu and often anti-Muslim actions (much of which were totally unnecessary) took out any chance for it. Added to this was the Rahul Gandhi disqualification matter. This was again an unnecessary thing; the disqualification would have happened in due course by law anyway, and all Modi and BJP achieved by hurrying it was to give a stick on a platter to Congress to beat them on the heads with. Saffron is right on this. Congress did get a straw to start a resurrection with that.

Prasen, I don't think economic results mattered much. Karnataka people don't have high expectations on that anyway. They were not voting against BJP because of national economic performance. Just stop the constant stream of corruption news, scandals, stupid religious divisiveness, etc, and just keep the state going in a peaceful manner, was all the Kannadigas wanted. BJP was incapable of doing that. No government has been able to, in Karnataka for a long time. We will see this same story repeat in 5 years, if I were to guess. Hopeless.

As far as Economy is concerned, India GDP rose from 1.3 trillion dollar in 2014 to 3.7 trillion dollar in 2023
And exports rose from 231 dollar in 2014 export to 670 dollar in 2023.........
But these figures are doesn't reflect a full picture.....India population is constantly growing thus it is natural for GDP to grow! And if you notice what happened to china in covid, India' s manufacturing is destined to grow a little bit....
Therefore, you can say that Modi has failed in its promise of economic development as he publicized !!! It is not wrong to say that Modi's economic policy has been total disaster for the country.....

The GDP number was revised upwards. In real sense, we had a very poor run under the BJP government, even when you account for COVID. But one must agree the challenges have been enormous. The Russia Ukraine conflict, did hurt us.

Our foreign policy has strengthened a lot. Exports we haven't done as well, but has improved. Internal processes have improved a lot. Making a passport or getting it renewed is quite hassle free and corruption free. Removing article 370 was a master stroke.

I have never understood the anti Muslim stance of this government. Totally unnecessary. Classifying people making comments on the PM as anti national is so strange. Aliented people like me from the party. I am certain more people are now distancing them from bjp due to these issues.

How removing 370 is a masterstoke??? Congress has promised to apply 370 if back in power in 2024 as it was taken away without consultation with local public!!!

I am not arguing for the constitutionality of it. If it is against the constitution, the courts should strike down the quotas. By definition, removing reservation for someone is being against that person. It is taking away something from that person. Whoever does it will be getting in the bad books of whoever they took things away from.
