Official World Golf Ranking as of 3/9/2004

PKB, Jyoti only around a month back had a brilliant outing when he shot -8 (64) in the last round of Johnnie Walker Classic event and moved from T26 to finish T2 among the company of top European stars. He surely shows flashes of brilliance from time to time. Although, I agree with you and I also wish that Jyoti play in PGA. But from consistensy point of view, I again disagree as Arjun is much more consistent and confident player than most of the other players out there in Asia.

Jyoti lost few points over the past week and his ranking has dropped by few places. But he is still just in the top 100. Next week EPGA/APGA jointly hosted Singapore open may be a good opportunity for him to get some points and consolidate his postion in top 100.

Code: Select all

Rank Player Pts. Avg. Tot. Pts. # of Evts.

99 Jyoti Randhawa 1.45 62.44 43
232 Arjun Atwal 0.59 31.53 53
509 Daniel Chopra 0.18 11.90 67
591 Arjun Singh 0.13 5.05 40
591 Jeev M Singh 0.13 9.23 73
605 Amandeep Johl 0.12 5.11 42
717 Harmeet Kahlon 0.07 2.93 40
Probably, one of the hottest current player in the world Jaidee, with yet another top 10 outing in Dubai has moved him to 69th place in the world and left Jyoti far behind in his wake for Asian players. Jyoti should take it as a challenge. Jyoti and Jaidee will be playing head on next week in EPGA/APGA to decide who is the best player in Asia right now.

Official World Golf Ranking as of 4/22/20

I didn't update World Rankings for some time as there was not much movement. But Daniel winning the NW tournament caused his ranking to jump upward. So I thought its time to capture their current rankings. Daniel is now in 400s. Both Arjun and Daniel haven't earned too many pts. this. With few good results, their ranking can go up pretty soon. Hopefully, we'll get some good results this week. Jyoti is still maintaining his rank in top 100.

Code: Select all

Rank	Name Pts Avg. Tot.Pts. Evts

 96	Jyoti Randhawa	1.41	63.41	45

419	Daniel Chopra 0.26	17.38	68
603	Arjun Singh 0.12 4.83	40
605	Jeev M Singh 0.12 8.67	72
619	Amandeep Johl 0.11 4.89	43

Nice upward move by Jeev, especially, although Jyoti's ranking has slipped quite a bit in recent months. He needs to qualify for the PGA tour soon...

Ever wonder what would happen if Daniel or Arjun or Jyoti or Jeev should win a big one some day?

Scott Drummond captured the Volvo PGA Championship yesterday and jumped 340 places from #435 to #95.

It is harder to make a big move in the top 20 with just one victory. David Toms successfully defended the FedEx St Jude Classic title and moved one place to #15.

Vijay stays at the #2 spot with Ernie close behind.

So Scott Drummond was ranked lower than Jeev until last week.
Presumably, Jeev edged up a bit too this week, but Indians won't ever have "home-course advantage" at a big event like the European PGA championship (as Drummond had at Wentworth). The closest thing is home-continent advantage -- which has twice come to the benefit of Arjun (EPGA titles in Singapore and Malaysia) and almost did for Jyoti in Singapore recently (T2 finish).

The Brits have a home field (home golf course  ) advantage since many of their courses are links and the Brits are used to the wind blowing across the course. Their golf course lay out is also different from the American golf courses.

PKB, you are correct and to further prove your point, the Brits have trouble doing well in USA. Colin Montgomerie could not win a major in USA, and Justin Rose is so close to winning in USA but manages to lose out on the final two days of the tournament.

The Volvo PGA Championship in England also gives more points than other EPGA tournaments (maximum 32 points at Volvo) and that helped Scott Drummond also.

I have no doubt that if Arjun and Daniel can retain their US PGA card for the next two to three years then both will win a PGA tournament. Daniel has correctly followed a path to secure his PGA card for next year, and winning two Nationwide Tour titles has given a big boost to his confidence. He believes that he can win a PGA title this year (Ajay's conversation with Daniel recently) and IMHO Daniel can win in 2004 also.

One of these days Joy and Swamy will get the Indian Open to become part of APGA and EPGA (is it possible?) and then we can have Arjun, Jeev, Jyoti and Daniel winning the Indian Open in successive years. How can we get a $1.5 million purse each year at the Indian Open?

There is indeed a possibility, though not before 2006 of an European PGA event in India. With so many MNCs in India, I am sure one of them, is going to decide that Golf is the Route to take.

Dubai and Qatar are on EPGA and this time during my trip to Dubai for Desert Classic, I heard Oman is trying to get a US $ 500,000 and hoping to be part of EPGA for a three-week Golf Swing.

I hope Asian Tour can tag onto Oman and that will mean a joint-sanctioned event. After all Asian Tour does not have a presence in Gulf.

It is official now, Ernie replaced Vijay as # 2 this week after winning the Memorial tournament last week. Vijay had overtaken Ernie in October 2003 and while everyone was focussed on the Tiger-Vijay battle for #1 position, Ernie quietly slipped into the # 2 position.

Jyoti continues to lose ground every week and he needs a victory on the JPGA Tour to regain his top 100 place.

Rankings as of June 7, 2004:

1 Tiger Woods, USA 12.99
2 Ernie Els, SAf 10.71
3 Vijay Singh, Fij 10.44
4 Davis Love-III, USA 8.09
5 Phil Mickelson, USA 7.58
6 Mike Weir, Can 6.52
7 Jim Furyk, USA 5.96
8 Padraig Harrington, Ire 5.67
9 Retief Goosen, SAf 5.13
10 Chad Campbell, USA 5.11
********************
133 Jyoti Randhawa, Ind 1.17
284 Arjun Atwal, Ind 0.47
329 Daniel Chopra, Swe 0.39
447 Jeev M Singh, Ind 0.23
503 Amandeep Johl, Ind 0.18 (only Indian to move up)
541 Rahil Gangjee, Ind 0.15
617 Harmeet Kahlon, Ind 0.11
649 Arjun Singh, Ind 0.10

Jyoti is slowly coming down from the high of top 100. I hope he regains some points soon and climb back. Daniel now has ranking that is much better representative of his game. Only few months back his ranking was in 500s. Arjun needs to make a move in the rankings too.

I'm curious whether Vijay has a chance to regain #2 spot in British Open and under what circumstance he can regain #2.

Updated August 2

After a good performance by Vijay, Daniel and Jyoti its time to see how it affected their World Rankings. Even after winning the tournament, Vijay remains #3. He probably needs another tournament victory to catch up Ernie Els. Tiger remains #1 for 330th consecutive week. That is one week short of the world record of Shark. Next week Tiger will equal that record and soon break it.

Daniel is now ranked 240 in the world. Jyoti also improved his rank to 142. Here is the list:

3 Vijay Singh
142 Jyoti Randhawa
236 Dinesh Chand
240 Daniel Chopra
296 Arjun Atwal
462 Jeev M Singh
522 Amandeep Johl
594 Rahil Gangjee
656 Harmeet Kahlon
682 Arjun Singh
971 Mukesh Kumar
