February 14, 2005 rankings

Post by BSharma »

Vijay hangs on to the #1 ranking over Tiger Woods by a razor thin margin (11.97 to 11.85). Tiger can topple Vijay from his throne this week.

Daniel moves up to 172 and Arjun Atwal is now ranked 251.

As Vijay is taaking off this week, Tiger just need to finish in top 4 to become #1. A very real possibility. And Tiger may be motivated to regain the top spot. Lets watch out.
Hopefully, after a week rest (or practice  ) and ironing out whatever problems may have crept in his game, Vijay will come back strongly in WGC match play next week.

World Rankings of "Indian" Golfers - Feb. 6, 2006

Thongchai Jaidee, who was ranked 90 last weeks, jumps to 58 after the win at Carlsberg Open in Malaysia. If this tournament had been a week earlier, Jaidee would have qualified for WGC playoff this week. Jaidee's goal is to get invitation to Masters in April by getting in top 50 soon.

Jyoti ranking is still not out, but he is now in similar position, actually little better, as Jaidee was last week. Can he also do a Jaidee and get invitation to Masters. That would be an unbelievable feat.

The uniqueness of the PGA Tour is that golfers like Jyoti and Jaidee (both top 100) are not playing on the Tour but Daniel with a #500 ranking got in. The criteria to get the PGA Tour card do not include the world ranking.

The world golf ranking gives more emphasis to the PGA Tour and EPGA Tour than APGA and JPGA and hence the top golfers on APGA and JPGA have trouble getting a high enough world ranking. Jaidee and Jyoti have earned a good amount of points from the joint sanctioned events of EPGA and APGA. Both are deserving of a "true" top 100 ranking.

Should we celeberate the 26 weeks reign of VJ or bemoan the loss of his ranking... Either way I guess we can drink to VJ...

It is a remarkable feat for any 40+ year old golfer to be ranked # 1 in the world. A 26 week reign is something to celebrate in my opinion.

Yes its worth celebrating, as Vijay was Top ranked player for Six Months ... And I don't think its small achievement.

Of course, his half year reign deserves celebration. But we also have reason to bemoan his inexplicable loss of form in recent weeks -- which has resulted in him being displaced from the pedestal of world golf. His terrific efforts over the previous two years should have conferred a longer reign for him at the top. But his form in the past few weeks has truly been woeful by his standards.

I think it is pre-mature to celebrate or mourn. Vijay may be back at #1 next week. As far as looking at the record of continuous weeks of #1, I don't expect any one break Tiger's previous record. Not even Tiger can match it. I'm sure there will more weeks for Vijay as #1. At least there is no reason to htink otherwise for now.
