Thanks Bhushan. Looks like Asian PGA ranks them according to skin color and how rich the countris are, or something!

Well in the end, Arjun Atwal, Daniel Chopra and Kevin Na (20 yr old from Korea) qualified for the US PGA tour in 2004. Higher-ranked Jyoti inexplicably skipped the qualifying tournament. Thongchai Jaidee was nowhere near qualifying (he finished a poor 128th in the qualifying tournament).
Here's the fairly detailed rediff story:

jayakris wrote:by the way, Bhushan, why do you have Fiji listed in the Asian rankings (which would make it necessary to include Asutralia and New Zealand and make it an asia/oceania ranking) and why are the Japanese not listed?

The rankings have been grouped in terms of tour. Therefore most of the Japanese players are not here. My guess is that whatever tour a players starts his professional career, his name remains under that tour. Vijay Singh started his career in Asia and therefore his name is in Asian List. Daniel Chopra probably became professional in Europe and his name comes in European list.

World Ranking of golfers of Indian origin as of Dec 24, 2003.

Rank in Asia; Name; (World rank)

1 Vijay Singh, Fiji (2)
3 Jyoti Randhawa, Ind (133)
9 Arjun Atwal, Ind (229)

22 Arjun Singh, Ind (544)
25 Jeev M Singh, Ind (553)
27 Amandeep Johl, Ind (566)
35 Harmeet Kahlon, Ind (677)
55 Rafiq Ali, Ind (937)
63 Vijay Kumar, Ind (1049)
70 Digvijay Singh, Ind (1180)
71 Gaurav Ghei, Ind (1194)
84 Shiv Prakash, Ind (1228
86 Ali Sher, Ind (1228)
91 Mukesh Kumar, Ind (1228)

147 Gurbarez Mann, Ind (1228)
148 Vishal Singh, Ind (1228)
149 Suleman Ali, Ind (1228)

Daniel Chopra is ranked 504 in the world and does not have an Asian ranking as per Asian PGA. I expect Daniel and Arjun Atwal's rankings to go up steadily in the next two years since the US PGA gives more points. The rankings are based on performance over the past two years.

I missed this Rediff articleearlier that tells that Jyoti now holds the record of having highest rank 133 in the world for an Indian. The previous best was by Jeev Milka Singh at 141 in early 1999.

World Rankings of "Indian" Golfers - Feb. 6, 2006

Post by ajay »

Official World Golf Ranking for this week have been published. Jyoti Randhawa makes a jump without playing a tournament. Jyoti Randhawa is now ranked all time high of 90 and in the process betters his own record for highest ranking by Indians. This is due to other players dropping more point than him.
Arjun Atwal and Daniel after their good show also improve their rankings Daniel enters into 400s and Arjun Atwal is moving towards top 200.

As of Feb 9, 2004, the rankings are as follows:

Code: Select all

Player Rank Pts Avg Tot Pts

 Jyoti Randhawa 90	1.50 	65.78
 Arjun Atwal 219	0.64 	34.37
 Daniel Chopra 478	0.20 	13.14
 Arjun Singh 529	0.16 	6.28
 Jeev M Singh 553	0.15 	10.65
 Amandeep Johl 585	0.13 	5.26
 Harmeet Kahlon	664	0.09 	3.68
We expect Daniel to make fast progress as small contribution also makes a big jump at his current ranking. His ranking is low as last two years he has pmostly played NW tournaments that does not give enough ranking pts. For example, he gained 2.23 pts. last week for his T25 position at AT&T Pebble Creek. Another 5 pts will move him into 300s

With yet another good result by Arjun Atwal ensured him some more world ranking points. T30 in Buick was worth 1.22 ranking points. Since the recent tournaments are weighted twice, Arjun adds 2.44 ranking pts. to bring his tally to 36.46 in 54 tournaments. Arjun jumps from last week rank of 219 to 205, just outside top 200.

The latest ranking of Indians as of 2/16/04:

Code: Select all

Rank	Player Pts. Avg. Tot. Pts.	# of Evts.

90 Jyoti Randhawa	1.52 65.18 43
205 Arjun Atwal 0.68 36.46 54
483	 Daniel Chopra 0.20 	13.14 	 67
545 Arjun Singh 0.15 6.09 40
554 Jeev M Singh 0.15 10.65 72
589 Amandeep Johl 0.13 5.26 41

Nobody gained any world ranking pts. last week, but they lost some pts. Jyoti's ranking remains unchanged but Arjun Atwal dropped down in the rankings as his last year ranking pts. in Carlsberg open got reduced.

The latest rankings:

Rank Player Pts. Avg. Tot. Pts. # of Evts.

90 Jyoti Randhawa 1.49 63.98 43
231 Arjun Atwal 0.60 31.71 53

Jyoti really should be aiming to get his PGA card. He seems to be a steady, consistent type -- albeit one who rarely reaches the brilliance occasionally achieved by Arjun Atwal and (for a round or two in some events) by Jeev.
