Chess: World Team Championship 2022, Jerusalem

Basically a froum to cover chess now that we seem to have sufficient interest in the game.

Quotes around it makes sense. Not a sport. Only a game. Like bridge, or scrabbles. The greatest non-sport game, maybe, though.

Carrom is a sport. Not chess.

You mean, looking at the number of top-10 players? What will it be if you go to top-25 or top-50 player rankings?

This is a measure that FIDE uses. I suspect that we would be up there with the larger numbers as well. Looks like e we are 3rd in the November Open country rankings.

Our top players:
Ranking#23: Gukesh D
Ranking#24: Vidit
Ranking#28: Arjun erigasi
Ranking#31: Harikrishna
Ranking #62: Pragnandha

I didn't include Vishwanath Anand as he doesn't play too much....

Good news is that Gukesh is only 16 years old and Arjun is 19 year old.....so they will definitely increase their ranking in coming 3-4 years

How would we do if we used only top-5 players from each country? Given that we have 5-6 players in the top 30, it should not be terrible.

Get ready for heartbreak. The more you’re sure of gold, the less likely it will actually happen.

Given that China will also be there, we would likely not be gold favorites in any case.

It depends on how Gukesh and Arjun progress over the next 12 months.

jayakris wrote: Sun Nov 27, 2022 5:31 pm Thanks for the roundup and update, Sin Hombre. Now I realize that we are no good in chess either. Okay, need to look for how Pakistan has been doing :)
We are pretty good, I would put us behind
Russia (historical superpower but I would expect us to go past them in < 5 years)
USA (they keep buying chess players from other countries so don't expect us to go past them)
China
Norway (they have Magnus, one of the two GOAT candidates. Ahead of us today but won't be ahead when Magnus declines)

Uzbekistan is about our level with a lot of top young players - we will see how it all pans out. Hopefully one of our young guns becomes a WC prospect (so top-2 peak ranking).

So 5th or 6th; I would have put us 2nd behind Russia during Anand's peak but that was purely because of Anand, not because of any actual strength in depth.

Chess was part of Asian games in 2006 and 2010. We won 2 golds in 2006- mixed team event and Koneru Humpy in womens rapid. In 2010, we got only 2 bronze medals- Harika in womens rapid and mens team.

So, let us see what we can get this time around.

It was there only for 2 Asian games and then was discontinued. Now part of next Asian games again.

I think we have more depth in chess than previous days. Now, we can win multiple medals in the event.
