European Series Tournaments March 2022

Post by sameerph »

4 weeks of tournaments being played starting this week in Europe- this week German open Super 300 followed by All England Super 1000 followed by Swiss Open Super 300 and ending with Orleans Masters super 100 in last week of March.

Big Indian contingent in Germany this week with almost everyone there.

In mens singles, 3 Indians have reached the QF- 8th seeded Srikanth who was seeded to get there, Lakshya Sen who thrahed world #5 Anthony Ginting today and Prannoy who beat 8th ranked Angus in the first round and beat another higher ranked player in second round.
Lakshya and Prannoy will play each other in QF while Srikanth will play world #1 Victor Axelsen and the winner of Lakshya- Prannoy match will play winner of Axelsen-Srikanth. So, it is upto 1 of the 3 Indians to beat world #1 in next 2 matches and we will have an Indian finalist. Easier said then done.

In womens singles, both Sindhu and Saina lost in second round today. Sindhu getting upset by 34th ranked Chinese player and Saina beaten by Thai Intanon.

Mens doubles pair of Krishan Prasad Garaga and Vishnu Vardhan have also reached the QF.

Nice win by all three Indian men in R-16 but the thrashing of world #5 Ginting by Lakshya Sen stands out. Hoping he is in the process of taking the next step up from his current top 10 level of play.
Mens doubles pair of Krishan Prasad Garaga and Vishnu Vardhan have also reached the QF.
Good to see Vishnu Vardhan finding another sport to lengthen his career. :D

When did Vishnu Vardhan switch to badminton? This is all too confusing. :D

Haha. :D On a serious note, he is Vishnu Vardhan Goud Panjala, 20 year old and does look a promising partnership with 22 year old Krishna Prasad Garaga. They lost 11-21 21-23 against Chinese pair today in QF.

In mens singles, Srikanth lost 10-21 21-23 against Axelesen.

Lakshya continued his good run with 21-15 21-16 win over Prannoy. He seems to be getting better and better. But, now big test against world #1 Axelsen in SF here.

Superb,Fantastic win for Lakshya in 3 games.

In a sense, it was "real SEN prevailed".

In the finals Lakshya lost to Thai player whom he had also lost to at world junior championships in 2018 ( but has also beaten him on senior tour last time they met in a close 3 games match). In today's match, Lakshya's movement seemed hampered as he had blisters on his foot and received treatment twice . In any case great for him to get his first win over world #1 although he ended up not winning the title.

At German Open BWF Super 300

[F] Lakshya Sen (IND,12) l. Kunlavut Vitidsarn (THA,20) 18-21 15-21

If the real Sen had blisters, then that explains the loss in the final. Hopefully, he heals fully to do well in the upcoming tournaments. He seems to be progressing very rapidly towards the top...

And now Lakshya Sen runs into another Sen, Antonsen. Too many Sens. Hope he meets his lakshya. Wonder if the famous sweet shop in Calcutta Sen Mohashoy has any plans of sponsoring all these Sens.
