So, we should keep some guy who scores 11 in all his innings. That would be stupid. Gill has contributed the least among all our batsmen. If you score a century and then 5 11's you are not a great batter. We would possibly had not won the last test without his contribution - that is true. However, how many tests have we lost because of his lacklustre performance abroad and also in India? We need to demand better than someone scoring 32 runs/innings. Gill also was almost out two times and was totally out of control at the beginning of that innings. He must be congratulated for his century. But, he has failed and caused defeats time and again for us. One win with a contribution does not absolve that. Or a few wins, if you consider his purple path in Australia. If you play with five batsmen and they turn up once in 10 tests to score a century, you are going to be a bad team. Same is the case with Rahul although he is not as bad as Gill. Iyer performed better than both of these and got kicked out because he does not have heavyweight backers. Nepotism is never good for a side.

It is only surprising if it comes from people who look at the last test and go up and down with it. Most serious fans look at a longer stretch. And, Gill has been horrible for long. Given that he is using up so many chances and is the architect of more losses than wins, he better score a few more centuries in this series. The English bowling has holes. Bashir looked very ordinary. Hartley and Ahmed looked good. We need to attack that weak link. Or Root as the fifth bowler. Or whoever is bowling badly that day.

Atithee wrote: Sun Feb 11, 2024 8:46 pm Big match temperament should be evident by this time. That’s what Aussies have from early ages in most sports. At least this part is real not hype.
Possible. I do not know if the Aussies have mig match temperatment from early ages. They have a very well-run setup that exposes them to top competition from early ages. Our competition is varied. So, the Aussies may be have more big match experience and from there they possibly choose players who take pressure well.

Actually, very few have big match temperament. I could only recall VVS Laxman being the person who worked fearlessly when the chips were down in innings 4 of a test match consistently.

Australia has won 4 U-19 WCs and we have won 5. So, maybe we do have big match temperament players when it comes to playing age-restricted players, where things are not as tight. But, in the senior team, we lack the Aussies badly. That may mean that the Aussies develop that temperament or retain that temperament more. Or it may mean that our players who have so-called big match temperament do not really have top notch skills and thus we don't have as many senior cups. Which says that you need both top-quality skills and big match temperament perhaps to win.

I think it all comes down to the system. The Aussies have a better system. So, they select better, nurture better, run their leagues better, etc. And, that system is very hard to overcome by individual brilliance and random efforts especially when you have rampant nepotism again raising its ugly head, etc.

Nobody else really. Maybe Leander Paes in Davis Cup.

Success breeds success. Andy Reid was considered a Choker a decade back and now he is though lt of in different light.

When u win big games it gives your confidence a boost. Between two equal teams invariably prior success gives an edge

Though I don’t agree 100% with Prince, he does have a point that when u start losing big games it requires lot of mental fortitude to come back. All it takes is one victory and before u know u will be winning thise games that u were previously losing .

Yes!!! :-)

Kohli's coach? Do we know the name of Kohli's coach? :-) All things in Indian cricket start from Kohli's coach folks. He gave us the best we have since the days of SRT and Dravid.
