India at 2019 WTA events

Post by IndiaSports »

Ankita and Karman will play their first WTA event of the year at Thailand.
They are taking part in the qualifying event and this is their draw.

WTA Thailand Open, Hua Hin, THA

[Q1] (wc)Ng Kwan Yau(HKG) v (11)Ankita Raina
[Q1] Chloe Paquet(FRA) v (12)Karman Thandi

Ankita had a great start to the season and she has very good draw here, if she wins her first round, she will most probably face Conny Perrin of Switzerland, in the final round, whom she beat last week. This is a nice opportunity for her to qualify for a WTA event. Hope she makes full use of it.

On the other hand, Karman has played just one competitive match in the last 1.5 months of which she lost a set 0-6.
So will be very interesting to see how much the off season training helped her game over all.

Lets see if both of them team up in doubles as well.

Just a thought which occurred to me may be absurd, Karman and Ankita have almost similar rankings and will end up playing almost same events every week, I wish AITA played a more active role and arranged some kind of common travelling coach for both of them, may be our former players like Ankita Bhambri or Rushmi Chakraborty.
After a long time we have two decent players who have chances of playing regularly at WTA events and GS, they really deserve all the support they can get.
And a travelling coach will definitely help both of them immensely.
Any thoughts?

Yes, fat chance of AITA doing this kind of thing.

Better chance if these 2 players get together on their own and work out something like that for common coach. Karman has support of ITF travel grant now and I think Ankita's travel expenses too are funded by Gujarat government. So, they need not worry about their own travel expenses. So, the can probably spend something for common coach and perhaps a physio too if they are travelling to same tournaments most of the time.

If someone were remotely interested, this is a very sensible thing to do. I don’t think we should expect anything from AITA though. Maybe Karman and Ankita can team up and share expenses (although I feel karman may be better positioned sponsorship wise)...

Good draw for Ankita to qualify for the main draw. She will most likely face Conny Perrin whom she just defeated in straight sets last week at the Singapore ITF. :goodluck:

Ankita on fire. Serves double bagel to girl who keeps getting wild card.

[Q1] (11)Ankita Raina bt (wc)Ng Kwan Yau(HKG) 6-0, 6-0.

Another disappointment for Karman, out 3-6, 5-7.
I am worried about her, the number of tournaments have reduced drastically and I dont see her in the entry list of any other upcoming tournaments.
She needs to pick and chose her tournments very carefully and get some match practice before entering these big events.
Next up the Fed Cups.

True, only lots of training and missing tournaments has not turned out to be good for Karman so far. She should have played the Singapore serie which would have prepared her well for this tournament.

Next,

At $250K WTA Thailand Open, Hua Hin

[Q2] (11) Ankita Raina (IND,203) vs. (5) Conny Perin (SUI,150)

Ankita beat Perin in straight sets in Singapore. But, Perin was in good form today too beating her 230th ranked Chinese opponent with loss of just 1 games. So, I guess Ankita will have a tough match on hand.

I guessed it right. Ankita could not repeat her win and Perin proved stronger this time around.

At $250K WTA Thailand Open, Hua Hin

[Q2] (11) Ankita Raina (IND,203) l. (5) Conny Perin (SUI,150) 67(1) 36

Ankita had 12 points to defend from last year's Taipei WTA next week and she does that with 1 win in qualies.
