Actually not very unexpected from Saurav. He has choked quite often in the past too when representing the country. Another disappointment was in mens weightlifting, failing to finish on the podium in 62kg class and only managing silver in 56kg. I don't think we will be able to match 2014 tally of 14 medals from weightlifting. Also with fewer events in wrestling, no judo this time, getting to 2014 overall medal total seems almost impossible. We should be extremely happy if we get to 60.

Sanjeeta Chanu wins gold in womens weightlifting 53 kgs with a total lift of 192 kgs, We did not have gold in this weight category last time. So, this is an addition to the gold tally.

Curiously, Sanjita Chanu lifted less than what Meerabai Chanu did in a lower weight category. Shows us how good Meerabai Chanu this.

Let's keep a count of potential Olympic and Asian medal winning performances.

Olympic potential - Mirabai Chanu (48kg women's weightlifting)

Asian potential - Mirabai Chanu (48kg women's weightlifting)

Deepak Lather won bronze in mens 62 kgs. That takes us to 2 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze ( all in weightlifting) and in fifth position after day 2. We are at the same position that were at the end of the competition 4 years back at Glasgow. Hope this time we go ahead of at least Scotland to fourth position. It will be great if we get ahead of Canada too but that would be difficult, I think.

We had a disappointing showing in 2014 in terms of Gold medals. We specialised in losing finals or just missing out and ended up with 30 silvers.

I think we should be at least matching, if not exceeding by a small amount (1-2), the gold medal total from 2014. That's because we have better quality in terms of our shooters, badminton players and also some of our weightlifters. However in the overall medal count we will probably fall short by a few.

I am not as concerned about CWG medal tallies as I am about at least Asian level performances after finishing in the top 3 a couple of times.

We always do well at weightlifting at the CWG, but the same weightlifters rarely do as well at the Asian Games -- and hence at the Olympics. (The women weightlifters are the exception though).

A very comfortable one but he is clearly on the decline with a performance which is a lot worse than Glasgow and Rio

He actually did better at Rio than he is doing here, by some distance.

We are fifth in the medal tally (2 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze) -- behind Australia, England, Canada and Scotland. At the 2014 games, this was the same order in the final medals tally (we had 15 gold, 30 silver and 19 bronze).

What I meant is that the CWG gold medalist rarely wins gold at the Asian games or a medal at the Olympics. Sathish Sivalingam won gold at Glasgow, and has repeated this year, but he finished 11th at the Olympics in 2016.

The level of Asian Games is world class as far as weightlifting goes so that is clear. Only swimming, cycling and rowing are world class at the CWG and arguably field hockey is close as well.

I have no issues with someone like Satish being consistent across CWG, AG, OG. Clearly, that is his level.

I am a lot more suspicious when someone like Mirabai Chanu can produce a world class performance at a lower level tournament like the CWG but suddenly dropping off a lot at a higher level at the Asian or Olympic games.

Also Athletics is close to world class in CWG at least a lot higher level than Asian games.

As regards, Meerabai she also won a gold at world championships last year. So, one can allow her one bad day at Rio if she continues this level in Asiad.
