A good day for India, especially when our top golfers are missing in this jointly hosted EPGA/APGA Omega Hong Kong Open. The scores at the end of first day are :

Great performance by Amandeep to be joint second. Harmeet did well too as he is in top 15. While Arjun Singh just a stroke behind.

Zhang, paired with England's Nick Faldo, made a good start to what is the 45th staging of Hong Kong's national Open. The Chinese star, winner of last month's Volvo China Open, is presently second on the Asian PGA Tour Order of Merit list behind Arjun Atwal. He trails the Indian by US$36,624 but could move to top spot this week with a good result. Atwal is competing at the US PGA Tour Qualifying School this week but will return to Asia next week for the season-ending Volvo Masters of Asia in Bangkok.
Note that if he finishes in top 5, he can catch up or get ahead of Arjun Atwal in Asian Order of Merit.

None of the Indians could shoot an under par round. With Amandeep and Arjun Singh loosing 1 stroke and Harmeet loosing two strokes.
Vijay Kumar had an uphill task to make cut and he couldn’t make it. With Amandeep maintaining a top 10 position and 3 out of 4 Indians making the cut, it has been good performance by Indians, especially considering that this is an EPGA co-sponsored event with high quality participation.

Amandeep slipped today with 2 over round, while Arjun and Harmeet had a par round but fell by few spots on the leaderboard.

Zhang dosen't seems to be any more threat to Arjun as he is way down at T40 in this tournament. So next week Arjun will go as a favorite for the Order of Merit with sizeable lead and advantage in the season ending final showdown with Zhang

This is one tournament where the Indians are following not only Amandeep, Harmeet and Arjun Singh but also keeping an eye on Zhang from China. As Ajay has written earlier, a poor performance by Zhang is good for Arjun Atwal who is not in Hong Kong to win some money. Hopefully Arjun Atwal can win the US PGA card in two days and then try to win the Order of the Merit title.

Although Amandeep, Harmeet and Arjun Singh did not finish in the top ten at the Hong Kong there was one piece of good news for the Indian golf fans. China's Zhang earned only $5,000 in this tournament and was unable to close the gap significantly between him and Arjun Atwal for the Order of Merit. Arjun is ahead by US$31,624 with one tournament to go. US$500,000 Volvo Masters of Asia will be held in Bangkok from Dec 11 to 14, 2003. Arjun Atwal will win the order of Merit title if Zhang finishes lower than second in the last tournament since the third place winner gets $30,000.
Arjun Atwal will have a few days to travel and get used to the new time change since the PGA qualifying tournament ends on Dec. 8th.
Jyoti Randhawa won the Order of Merit last year.

Arjun Atwal wins the Asian Order of Merit title. With this win he gets a place for the British open next year (another of his dream to play and some day win in a major). Atwal also automatically gets the JPGA card (just like Jyoti got it last year). So Atwal has card for PGA, EPGA, JPGA and APGA next year. But we will see him playing mostly in PGA, plus few EPGA events and Indian events as part of APGA.
Now for two years Indians have the OOM title. Who will fill in the shoes of Jyoti and Arjun and make a run for the OOM title next year? Go Amandeep! Arjun Singh! Harmeet!

Harmeet Kahlon wins the Rs 50 lakh EMAAR-MGF PGTI Championship at Banglore to take home the winner's cheque of Rs 810,000 as well as claim his berth at the US $2.5 million 2007 Dubai Desert Classic ... That means he is getting chance of playing along players like, Tiger Woods and Ernie Els ... Hopefully Jeev and Jyoti will accompany him in this prestigeous tournament.

Ajeetesh Sandhu is currently 207 in the OWGR world rankings. However, his ranking is based only on 12 tournaments while the minimum divisor for the rankings is 40 (which applies to him). He has no points dropping off for the next 6 months, so he will have an opportunity to surge up the rankings in the next year.
If you divide his point total by 12, his average would be similar to someone in top 50. He isn't a spring chicken at 29 but definitely appears to have reached a new level in the last few months. Someone to watch out for next year!

Arjun Atwal was never in the top 100? He even won an USPGA title.

Arjun did win a US PGA tournament (the first Indian to do so), but he never did anything of note in any of the majors. He played all four of them at least once, but never made the cut in any of his five appearances in the majors. That is presumably the reason why his career-best ranking is so underwhelming. (Also, I think one can pick up quite a lot of world ranking points on the European tour, where Arjun didn't play much once he had got his PGA tour card).
