Riya comes up with an important first round win at the 60K+H Chile Challenger (on clay) to gain some lost momentum in her singles game. Before this result, she lost 5 matches in straight sets.

60K+H Santiago ITF

Yes, good win for Riya. Also kudos to her for travelling to South America for these tournaments where not too many Indians venture to.

Riya has been playing in 25K's in South/Central America for last 3 weeks, in Mexico in last 2 weeks and Dominican Republic this week. Lost in first round in all 3 weeks. Will continue there at least in next 2 weeks it seems. Gutsy of her to go all the way there to play although she is not getting the desired results.

Riya is in the US skipping the 2nd leg of the Gurugram W25 ITF and has entered qualifying at the W100 Charleston ITF. She came up with a good win today against the #4 ranked college tennis player, Sarah Hamner. Prarthana is also playing in the doubles main draw (mods, feel free to start a thread for this tournament as per rules).

W100 Charleston ITF (green clay)

QR1 [4] Riya Bhatia (537) 6-2 6-1 Zora Hudson (USA, 928-ITF)
QR2 [4] Riya Bhatia (537) 5-7 6-1 10-7 Sarah Hamner (USA,966-ITF)

Riya gets 6 ranking points for qualifying. Hope she draws a favorable opponent in the opening round of the main draw and gains more points and $$. :goodluck:

Riya lost 26 26 against American Victoria Duval who is currently ranked 362 but has been in top 100 earlier.

Still a good week for Riya who has been trying to go and play lot of tournaments abroad with mixed success. Hope this pays off eventually for her.

Riya Bhatia reaches QF in Brazil W25. One of the weakest field at W25 level as Riya had to beat 2 players ranked close to 1000 in first 2 rounds but good that Riya won easily losing only 1 game in each of those matches.

At W25 Rio De Janerio, Brazil (Clay)

[R1] (4) Riya Bhatia (IND,537) d. Heydi Doldan (PAR,996) 61 60

[R2] (4) Riya Bhatia (IND,537) d. Julia Konishi Camargo Silva (BRA,1000) 60 61

Next,

[QF] (4) Riya Bhatia (IND,537) vs. (7) Romina Ccuno (PER,729)

At W25 Goyang ITF, South Korea:

(5) Riya Bhatia (487) 3-6 3-6 Yujin Ahn (KOR, ITF-1126).

Only Indian (ranked) players will succumb to unknown unrated players. Her opponent was playing only her third tournament of the year.

Argh. I will actually be in Seoul this weekend, and had a faint hope that Riya would make the semifinal and I could see her play on Saturday. I guess not.

I agree with you that we only see Indians succumb like this. It happens at such high frequency too. How many such upsets have we seen from an Indian? Almost none. maybe when the other player was injured or ill or something, but very few otherwise. It is sad.
