Seventh doubles title of the year (and 39th of her career) as she wins in New Haven with Monica Niculescu (ROM, 16). That ensures that Sania will remain #1 in women's doubles for her 17th consecutive full month. (She has been world #1 since 12 April 2015).

There are SOOOO many Chinese women players coming up. Like literally there are 20-30 of them at the top 300 level. They must be doing something right.

This is also 3rd title of Japan open for Sania before this she had couple of title with Cara Black ... In the first set our pair broke Chinese pairs four times and lost their service game once ... WTA Finals (Quarter Final): Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis beat the Chan sisters in a pulsating match, 76(9) 75.

Sania's serving was very strong, and her return of serves were often breathtaking. Martina was brilliant at the net, but her serve was broken thrice (including once at 5-5 in the first set, which could've been dangerous for the pair but they managed to immediately break back with some fabulous service returns, especially from Sania). Our pair were generally ahead in the first set tiebreak, except at 8-9, but managed to save that point and took it 11-9. The first time Martina was broken in the second set (at love), Sania did miss a couple of volleys. But otherwise, our pair managed to raise their game when it really mattered, at 5-5 in the second set when they attacked the taller Chan sister (who has much the stronger serve, while the stockier sister has a very strong ground game and service-return, but was otherwise more vulnerable with her serve), quickly making it 0-40, 15-40 and then breaking. In her final service game, Martina did much better (including one ace; Sania had at least three in the match), and Sania's volleying was pin-point too, and they ran away with the match as Martina held at 15 (the only time she held in the second set I think!).

Sadly lost the semifinal, and with that Sania's run as world #1 doubles player ends -- and indeed her two-year run as WTA Finals champion.
Vesnina knows Sania too well, and was serving down the T to her backhand later in the match to neutralise her strength. 6-10 in the match tiebreak, and the Russians just slowly sneaked up on our pair -- taking a 4-2 lead in the STB against Martina's serve, and never relinquishing that edge. Our pair also lost their spirit as the match started slipping away, showing the effect of their separation.
