Re: Mukund Sasikumar thread

Post by jayakris »

"Ssaassikumar" leads 61 21, up a break in the Q2 at gwangju. No, I am not calling him Sasi. Just what the umpire called him. Mukund had broken Son twice in the first set. Son had Double faulted at 30-40 and gave him a break just now, but Mukund gave it back with 2 or 3 lazy groundies in the next game. Son had a DF and faced two BPs in the 7th game and Mukund converted the second one with a 16 shot rally where he hit the ball well. He made that hold up and finished off a rather easy match to make the main draw.

[Q2] (2) Mukund Sasukumar (IND,371) d. (12) Ji Hoon Son (KOR,1007), 61 64

He gets $520 for the making the main draw. At least some money! The main draw is awaited after the qualifiers are all determined. Only one of the 7 qualifier/LL spots is facing a seeded player, so not bad.

Further discussions will be in the Asian Challengers 2022 thread, as YukiSaki are in doubles there as well.

As reported at the Asian challengers thread (link above) Mukund lost in the R2 at Gwangju ch, Q2 at the Seoul ch, and R1 (after qualifying in) at the Busan ch. Some good wins and upsets there but he is not stringing enough wins together. This week, as reported by Sameer at the Prajnesh thread, he lost at the Playford Challenger 80 in Australia too.

[R1] Sasikumar Mukund (IND,359) l. Yu Hsiou Hsu (TPE,334) 46 26

For match report on Mukund's superb upset of 2nd seed Duckworth at the Sydney challenger, his further rounds and doubles with Prajnesh there, etc, go to the Asia-Australia challenger thread.

Since Mukund's name is properly listed now, officially in ATP/ITF draws (as of last month, I believe), I have changed the name of the thread from "Sasi Kumar Mukund" to "Mukund Sasikumar" :) .... Mod, Jay

Change it to make it more Indian. List it as S. Mukund. :-)

Looks like Mukund withdrew yesterday from the Monastir M25 next week.

Mukund played M15 in Egypt this week but got upset in second round.

At M15 Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt

[R1] (1) Sasikumar Mukund (IND,343) d. (Q) Daniel Ibragimov (RUS,1811) 76(5) 63

[R2] (1) Sasikumar Mukund (IND,343) l. Oscar Moraing (GER,886) 63 46 67(6)

He will continue there next week too. Don't know why he is playing in these M15 tournaments instead of doing some off season training. Even a title will fetch only 15 points after playing 5 matches.

^^^ No idea what he is doing. Are these players not getting any advice from anybody? It makes no sense to do what he is doing. I guess he is at least not wasting time on that pro league tamasha in India.

This is a weird tournament. The only seed to make even the QFs were Mukund and the 7th seeded Egyptian. And the 7th seed then retired against a qualifier who now faces Mukund. A talented player is in the other semi though - 18 year old junior exempt entry Martyn Pawelski (POL) who was ranked #16 in the juniors this year. He took out the second seed earlier and has won three easy straight set matches.

Nice to see Mukund slowly come into his own, after a disappointing early loss last week.
There is no good reason for him to play there at this time of the year -- except perhaps to enjoy the tourism haven (and host city of COP27).

^^^ I think he really wants to get even those 8 or 15 points for a final because he has 33 of his 144 points falling off on Jan 9th for the Forli challenger final, and he will fall out of top-400 (and out of challenger possibilities). This is probably to stay around 375 in ranking by the second week of January. But he doesn't have to sweat this much because Indian events are coming, and he really doesn't have anything much to defend for the first few months of 2023.

Another easy win for Mukund to move to final.

At M15 Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt

[SF] (1) Sasikumar Mukund (IND,342) d. (Q) Seydina Andre (SEN,1338) 64 61

Mukund has been breezing thru the draw week but now gets the toughest one against talented youngster.

[F] (1) Sasikumar Mukund (IND,342) vs. Martyn Pawelski (POL,1139)

Both have not dropped a set this week. So, I expect a close match.

Good for him. This place is for people looking for cheap points but somehow have seen it work for very few. So good for mukund to have made it to the finals with ease. I suspect finals will be a another easy game. If he maintains his cool
