Re: Rio Summer Olympics \ Summer Paralympics 2016
Through that one event, we have equalled our best-ever standing at the Paralympics (1 gold and 1 bronze in 2004). Last time in London, we had just one silver at the 2012 Paralympics. In 1984, we had 2 silver and 2 bronze. The 2004 gold medalist in javelin has mounted a comeback and is in Rio. He has the year's second best distance, so is a medal contender.
Before Rio, India had won just 8 medals (2 gold, 3 silver, 3 bronze) in the Paralympics (which still places us in 73rd place overall).

Re: Rio Summer Olympics \ Summer Paralympics 2016
We had earlier discussed how weirdly tactical the Olympic 1,500m final was. Well, here's proof - four visually impaired runners in the same event at the paralympics beat the gold medal time at the Olympics.

Devendra Jhajharia breaks the world record in T-53 Javelin to win a gold medal at the Paralympics, his second (after the one he won in 2004). India now have our best-ever gold and overall medal haul in the Rio Paralympics.

PKB, event was 'Men's Javelin Throw - F46'.
Congratulation for Devendra Jhajharia for his second Gold medal, his previous best was 62.15 metres (achieved in the 2004 Games), improved the mark with an attempt of 63.97 metres on his third attempt at the Olympic Stadium (Engenhao) ... He last participated in the Paralympics 12 years ago as the F46 event did not feature in the 2008 and the 2012 editions ... India's Rinku Hooda finished on 5th with 54.39m throw ... India now have two gold, one silver and one bronze in the ongoing edition of the Games.

Certainly proud of their medal achievements but these athletes are all winners for what they are able to overcome just to compete at a high level!
Re: Rio Summer Olympics \ Summer Paralympics 2016
Yes. rest assured, such slowing down tactics will not work for the next couple of Olympics atleast - and then someone will try it again!!Prashant wrote:We had earlier discussed how weirdly tactical the Olympic 1,500m final was. Re: Rio Summer Olympics \ Summer Paralympics 2016
Sounds just crazy that the top-6 finishers tested positive.
Are the testing methods getting more sophisticated (to explain why the samples from 2012 are only reporting positive test results now)?

Re: Rio Summer Olympics \ Summer Paralympics 2016
It is complicated. But, the simplest answer is that the testing methods can detect traces at much lower concentrations. Which means that concentrations from drugs taken a longer time ago is now caught. Say, the previous test could find things at concentrations usual in the first month. The athlete gave it 45 days to be safe. Now, they can detect it at concentrations that are much lower meaning that the traces available even after two months. Hence, the athletes are caught. This is one type of tactic being used now. The others are just better tests to detect some items.
Heavyweight weightlifters almost all are dopers. For the lower weights, I do not know if they can dope and build muscles and still remain in the weight category.
As always, any SME please correct my simplistic explanation.

Re: Rio Summer Olympics \ Summer Paralympics 2016
Apart from detecting much smaller concentrations, as explained by Prasen above, new testing methods are detecting "longer-term metabolites". This has resulted in the spate of positive tests that have come from Beijing and London. Almost all of Beijing retests have resulted in positives for stanozolol and turinabol, both steroids, that normally get washed out in say four to six weeks when taken in tablet forms. Steroid injections may last for around 10 months.
A substance when it metabolizes in the body is passed through urine in a variety of metabolites apart from the parent substance. The parent substance stays for a short period only, say a few days (as pointed out in Narsingh Yadav case when compared with his room-mate Tulasi Yadav), metabolite-1 for say one week, metabolte-2 for 10 days, metabolite 3 for 15 days and so on. The new testing method is able to detect a long-term metabolite for as long as six months, say reports.
