Junior Indian Hockey - men and women

Post by ssp »

4 nation U21 tournament in Gold Coast, Australia started today.

We beat NZL 5-1 in our opening match :D

The other 2 teams are Australia and Japan. Harendra is in charge of our team and the squad is virtually unchanged from the Sultan Johor Cup winning team. This trip is in preparation for the Junior Asia Cup next year. Pleased to see that we are planning these things now!

On a separate note: do the moderators want to move this post onto a new Junior Indian Hockey (men and women) thread? We could move other U21 stuff onto this new one?

India defeated Aus 4-2.

I saw one guy commenting on this piece of news that this Indian team is a strong cadidate for podium finish in 2020 Olympics, if they dont, it will be due to mismanagement of HI

I've seen many promising junior teams in the past and every single time we have not transferred this to the seniors. Recently, we have been awful at world and Asian level u21 tournaments. Let's hope this group reverses the trend!

Good to 3 wins. Not sure if there is a final.

Our juniors mens team started very well beating Germany 3-0 in the opening match with goals from Arman Qureshi, Harmanpreet Singh and Harjeet Singh who are all promising juniors. Not sure of the strength of the German side but I will take any win over a German side.

In the Volvo Invitational under-21 tournament in Breda, the Indian junior men lose 1-3 to Belgium and 1-2 to Netherlands in their 3rd and 4th matches -- so they are back down to planet earth. The junior women tied Germany 4-4 in their second match before losing to a strong China team 2-4 in their 3rd match, so their performance has generally been per expectations.

Our junior boys lost to England 0-3 in the third place playoff while our junior girls beat England 2-1 in the third place playoff. Again our girls doing better than boys overall.

Now even the pipeline is getting decimated. Indian hockey is dying -- fast.

Yes, depressing results from the juniors. I was hoping for something better at this tournament.
U21 results are very variable generally, but our teams can beat a team one day and then lose pathetically to the same opponents in the next match!

Finished 5-1 after a harder fight from Pakistan in the 2nd half. We missed several chances, but also gave away too many PCs and turnovers from sloppy, careless play.
Already, this tournament looks like a repeat of last year, with GB and India looking the strongest teams. Argentina defeated Australia 1-0, but I would never count against the Aussies.
