What is meant by progressive ? I do not get that criteria for TB.

Hey Sameer - progressive score is used as a tie-break in Swiss style tournaments, it is essentially a way to weight earlier wins somewhat more than later wins, since in theory player could otherwise deliberately draw first 2-3 rounds to get weaker opposition in later rounds. So it is a common tie-break. But, it makes much less sense in a team competition than in individual, or at least they should use the game score first.

A lot of individual tournaments use the Sonneborn Berger (sp?) tiebreak instead, which is basically calculated by seeing how all the opponents perform (i.e. you have better tiebreak if you played better performing opponents). But this one can only be calculated retrospectively, i.e. after all rounds are complete...

And we lose board 2. Tie with Russia. Medal looks unlikely now. Do we get paired with Czech Republic next?

Thanks, Prashanth. I was just thinking today that it was bad for us that we went into lead early and thereby drew USA, Ukraine and Russia 3 of last 4 rounds. But, it looks the other way around as our progressive score is lower than some of the other teams.

Not out of it yet it seems. Both US and Ukraine won their matches. So, both are on to 18 points and assured of gold and silver. Russia is third at 16. We are tied 4th with 15 with at least 5-6 teams.

If we win in the last round and Russia lose or draw, it may come down to tie break which unfortunately does not look good for us.

India against Norway in the final round in the Open section...

Hopefully Hari will be able to hold against Carlsen and others will steam roll on the rest of the boards...

I don't think it matters. We cannot catch US & Ukraine irrespective of the result. We can only catch Russia if they lose to Italy, who are a lowly 10th in the standings. Russia has much better tiebreaks than us, so if they even draw 2-2 vs Italy, India is out of the medals.

We do have a very decent chance of finishing fourth if we win against Norway though, as Canada plays US and the other teams with the same points as us largely play each other...

Our women's team seems to have a real chance for a medal though if we beat USA in last round. It can even finish with a silver with a bit of luck.

We end with a 2-2 draw against Norway. Excellent performance by Hari to remain unbeaten on top board even against Carlsen today. Sethu made a mistake and lost today but Vidit compensated by winning. As expected USA, Ukraine and Russia end up with medals.

Will wait and see our final ranking but I think we have a chance to finish 4th.

A very bad bishop sac by Sethu put India on the backfoot, but great comeback to tie it 2-2 in the end...

On the women's side... Padmini missed a win and ended up losing...
Tania benefited from her opponent's mistake in the end game to win it...
Soumya missed a win in time scramble at the fag end of the game...
Harika drew on the top board...


2-2 draw and a missed medal...

If Carlsen and Kramnik are playing, why not Anand?

4th it is for the Indian men... and most likely a chance to get into the World Team Championships....

Hari is 4th for Top board rating performance...

Indian women finish 5th...

Overall, not bad... we didn't finish below our starting rank.....

In the first two rounds against weak opposition we swept the points. In the last 9 rounds against better opposition:

Board 1: Hari 5.5/9.0
Board 2: Adhiban 4.5/9.0
Board 3: Vidit 6.0/9.0
Board 4: Sethu 3.5/9.0

We really suffered on board 4 compared to the other top teams. The first 3 boards did great, particularly Hari in going unbeaten against great opposition.

That is no reason not to play. Earlier some of the other top players were also not playing. So, there was fear of losing rating points. Here almost all the top players played. So, Anand should have been there and it could have made a difference for us between a medal and finishing fourth.

Also why is Humpy not playing ? She is ranked # 3 in the world and everyone around her in the world rankings played. Also Harika did not have her best tournament getting 6 out of 10 points which is not good considering she is # 5 in the world.
