Karman had an excellent run in Grade 1 tournament in Canada where she reached the SF beating a top 20 and a top 35 player on the way and coming close to beating a top 10 player. With these points, Karman will get close to top 60 in ITF junior rankings. More importantly, she has now got a special exempt spot in the US open juniors main draw which will be her first grand slam.

It seems she is coached in Canada by Bobby Mahal - same coach who trained Sumit Nagal earlier. Karman and Sumit seem to have a common coaching team - Bobby Mahal in North America and Scheuttler Waske acadamy in Europe. Hope both continue their rapid progress all the way towards top 100 in pros.

At 17, Karman made the last-16 of the first junior Slam (singles) she played, beating the world's junior #20 and 28 on the way. Her progress in recent months has been meteoric. Keep it up!

Karman mentioned in one of her post US-Open interviews that - "Mahesh Bhupathi and Ryan International School are supporting her financially. And she's on the US Open tour because of them". So that solves the common Bobby Mahal connection puzzle. And also, great job Mahesh :notworthy:

Karman broke in top 50 in ITF junior rankings for the first time being ranked at a career high of 49 this week. She has no more points to defend this year and so is assured of making the main draw at Australian open juniors.

I think she would now concentrate on ITF womens event and try to improve her results/ rankings there for the rest of the year unless she decides to make the trip back to North America at the end of the year for Eddie Herr/ Orange Bowl events which would not be bad too.

Maybe we can start a campaign here for karman, sumit and yuki? Incidentally has anyone heard of rashi kakkar as a junior? She is the author of the article.

KKT is in the entry list of a couple of $50K CH events in Canada :D starting next week. First one is at Saguenay ,followed by Toronto.

I hope she gets some Junior Exempt for Main draw. :goodluck:

Junior exempt is available only for juniors ranked in top 10 in the rankings. So, Karman cannot get any junior exempt spot with her current ranking.

But, I think at this stage it is better for her to play qualifying at the 50K level rather than playing in main draw and running into top 200 players directly.

But, she has given up that break and is level at 5-5 in the first set.

Karman lost the first set 67 (6). Such a close one. Now, she will have to fight back like yesterday.

[Q-F] Karman Kaur THANDI (IND,1029) l. Nadja GILCHRIST (USA,500) 67(6) 36

She's up a break at 3-2 in the 2nd set....
Lost serve twice after that to go down 3-5, had multiple break points in the final game of the match but couldn't convert to lose the set 3-6 and with that the match... that went on for two hours...

Most telling stat that went against KKT ... :-(

Break Points Saved: 5/9 - 55%
Break Points Won: 3/17 - 18%

She's in the Doubles main draw, but face the top seeded pair in R1... :goodluck:

[R1] (1) Sharon FICHMAN (CAN) / Maria SANCHEZ (USA) v. Fatma AL NABHANI (OMA) / Karman Kaur THANDI (IND)
