Looking the way Sumit succeeded, we need to be patient with Karman. Her injury break was a long one. She played for a few months in between but got injured again.

So no stress. Just enjoy the game.

Yes, she did win W60 level tournament just last October. So, she is very much capable of playing top 200 level at least like Sumit. Needs to stay injury free for some time.

Today, she qualfied for Prague ITF.

At Prague W60, Czech Republic (Clay)

[Q2] (2) Karman Kaur Thandi (IND,278) d. (10) Julie Struplova (CZE,453) 76(4) 63

Struplova has reached 3 W15 finals this year while Karman is coming off an injury break. So, this is an impressive win by her.

Actually she is capable of playing top-100 or even top-50 tennis if she puts things together, unlike Sumit who has some limitations. Karman really doesn't have much of that, if she stays injury-free and gets a bit more accurate and error-free. Great win today, but our wait needs to continue for some more time, to see her in the top-200 and higher.

I agree Sumit needs better serve. But I have seen top 100 European clay courtiers with similar serve. They play on clay all year round and do decently well.

Karman has a better around game, better serve but her back hand is weaker. But she has time and coaching along with her.

Yes and also weaker movement across the court, Sumit is very quick across the courts. But, Karman of course has big serve which is a big advantage. Forehand is big for both.

Karman gets a fellow qualifier in first round who is ranked lower than the player she beat today.

[R1] (Q) Karman Kaur Thandi (IND,278) vs. (Q) Ivana Sebestova (CZE,658)

Sebestova qualfied for W25 and W60 tournaments in last 2 weeks but lost in first round. Hope the same trend continues.

Interested where you "saw" top 100 players these days serving first serves at 100 mph average unless you meant courtiers in some royal court. :D

A couple of references on Nagal's serve speed in 2020 versus average serve speeds of top players. I think Nagal's serve right now is even slower than it was in 2020.

And Karman has an easier win than yesterday.

[R1] (Q) Karman Kaur Thandi (IND,278) d. (Q) Ivana Sebestova (CZE,658) 60 63

Next up against 4th seed.

[R2] (Q) Karman Kaur Thandi (IND,278) vs. (4) Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (ESP,182)

Karman lost in straight sets.

At Prague W60, Czech Republic (Clay)

[R2] (Q) Karman Kaur Thandi (IND,278) l. (4) Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (ESP,182) 46 36

Still, a very good run by Karman so soon after her injury on her not so favourite surface. She has moved up a bit and is around 263 in live rankings.

Looks like Karman will be back on the tour next week. She is the entry list of W40 in Montemor-O-Novo in Portugal which is on hard courts next week. Ankita too is entry list there although I wish she makes the main draw at FO instead.

Karman is also in the entry list of W25 in Setubsal, Portugal the week after.

She had posted videos of her practicing in Chandigarh at Aditya Sachdeva acadamy few days back. So, probably she played a couple of week on clay just to test her body on softer surface and then took 2-3 weeks break to prepare for hard courts.

At W40 Montomor-O-Novo, Portugal (Hard)

[R1] Karman Kaur Thandi (IND,265) vs. Amandine Hesse (FRA,691)

Hesse has been ranked as high as 154 but that was 7 years back and this year she has not won much. So, good match for Karman on her return to hard courts after some time.

Hesse is a mom now but that hasn’t stopped her from producing quality wins against the likes of Stefanini (#105), Paquet (#181), Robbe (#190) since her return after maternity break. I wouldn’t treat this as an easy match.

Karman was up 5-1 in the first set and had 4 set points on own serve in that game and few more set points later too but it went to tie break. Thankfully, Karman took the tie break easily 7-2 to take the first set 76(2) after 1 hour 12 mins.

She choked on so many big points today. She had 2 match points on Hesse's serve at 5-3 and then 2 on her own serve, before Hesse netted one and she won on her 5th match point. Get your mind in order, Karman. But it is a good win against a tricky opponent.

[R1] (4) Karman Kaur Thandi (IND,268) d. Amandine Hesse (FRA,690), 76(2) 64
so,
[R2] (4) Karman Kaur Thandi (IND,268) vs. Olga Helmi (DEN,423)

For someone making one more comeback from injury break, this is good. The grind must have helped understand her fitness levels better. One match at a time.

Karman has taken the first set 76(4) in her second round match in Portugal. Was down 1-4, got it back to 4-4, was at 40-0 on opponent serve to try to go up 5-4 but lost 5 straight points from there. Karman held and then broke but failed to serve out for the set at 6-5. Thankfully, took 4 straight points from 3-4 down to take the tie break.

Still struggling to close out games when ahead. But, we will not complain if she finally gets the job done.
