48 probables for the Asia Cup are here:
Goalkeepers: PR Sreejesh, PT Rao, Sreenivasa Rao Katharu, Nanak Singh, Naveen Kumar, Jagdeep Dayal, Abhinay Kumar Pandey.

Defenders: VR Raghunath, Rupinder Pal Singh, Harbir Singh Sandhu, Amit Rohidas, Sampath Kumar Maylaram, Gagandeep Singh, Dayananda Chanamthabam, Narinder Pal Singh, Gurmail Singh.

Midfielders: Sardar Singh, Manpreet Singh, M B Aiyappa, Kothajit Singh, Pardeep Mor, Vivek Dhar, Birendra Lakra, Jaspreet Singh, Simranjit Singh, Manjit Kullu, Vikas Pillay, Sumit

Forwards: SV Sunil, Gurwinder Singh Chandi, Chinglensana Singh, Danish Mujtaba, SK Uthappa, Pradhan Sommanna, Nithin Thimmaiah, Dharamvir Singh, Akashdeep Singh, MG Poonacha, Prabhdeep Singh, PL Thimmanna, Sukhdev Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Jasjeet Singh, Nikin Thimmaiah, Harman Preet Singh, Manjinder Singh, M.K Muddappa, Gagandeep Singh.
Some relief to see Sandeep & Shivendra dropped, but Nitin, Akashdeep, Gurmail & Dharamvir are still in the list. Akashdeep stays but Mandeep is dropped!! What kind of nonsense is this?? Perhaps, the question should be; what connections does Akashdeep have??

Some new guys, but most of the IHF/WSH players are still not being considered. Although Manjit Kullu and Vikas Pillay maybe exceptions. Pleased to see both of them get a chance. Would have preferred Bharat Chikkara and Roshan Minz as well from the WSH group. No Malak Singh or Lalit. maybe they are being 'saved' for the JWC.

Goalkeepers: 1. Nanak Singh, 2. P R Sreejesh, 3. P T Rao, 4. Sreenivasa Rao: Defenders: 5. Amit Rohidas, 6. Harbir Singh Sandhu, 7. Rupinder Pal Singh, 8. V R Raghunath, 9. Gurmail Singh, 10. Kothajit Singh, 11. Birendra Lakra Midfielders: 12. Sardar Singh, 13. Manpreet Singh, 14. M B Aiyappa, 15. Vikas Pillay, 16. Prabhdeep Singh, 17. Dharamvir Singh, 18. Chinglensana Singh, 19. S K Uthappa Forwards: 20. Danish Mujtaba, 21. Akashdeep Singh, 22. Nithin Thimmaiah, 23. Pradhan Somanna, 24. S V Sunil, 25. Gurvinder Singh Chandi, 26. Talwinder Singh, 27. Mandeep Singh, 28. Ramandeep Singh, 29. Malak Singh, 30. Jasjeet Singh, 31. Nikkin Thimmaiah, 32. Harmanpreet Singh, 33. M K Muddappa
Manjit Kullu doesn't make it the next stage. Final 33 does include 3 injured guys; Akashdeep, Danish and Chandi. I think it's a good thing to see the first 2 injured, but Chandi would have been useful.Perhaps Dharamvir and Nitin could be injured too? ;)

I don't know what the coaches and selectors see in Akashdeep. He may look good in training or our useless camps, but in every tournament I have seen hi in, he has great trouble trapping simple passes. same goes for Dharamvir and Danish. Maddening and really hampers our chances in tight games when 3-4 guys just give the ball away every bloody time

Other interesting thing is that Mandeep is missing from the original 48 players, but makes it to the next stage!! Only in India....

Sunil is out of the Asia Cup due to torn ligaments in his elbow. That is a serious setback as he is our main forward. With Chandi out too, we are going to be struggling in attack.

Here is the team for the Asia Cup:

Goalkeepers: P R Sreejesh (vice-captain), P T Rao.
Defenders: V R Raghunath, Rupinder Pal Singh, Amit Rohidas, Kothajit Singh, Birendra Lakra, Gurmail Singh.
Midfielders: Sardar Singh (captain), Manpreet Singh, Chinglensana Singh, Dharamvir Singh, S K Uthappa.
Forwards: Ramandeep Singh, Nithin Thimmaiah, Mandeep Singh, Malak Singh, Nikin Thimmaiah.

Not too hopeful about the forwards. Hope Ramandeep turns out to be a good find. Disappointed to see Vikas Pillay dropped from the final selection. As usual there are several players that don't inspire any confidence at all; Gurmail, Dharamvir, Uthappa, Nithin and Malak. Then we have the sloths- Ragunath and RP Singh.

Pakistan beat Malaysia today which pretty much secures top of the group finish for them...We play Korea tomorrow in a crucial game....

Pakistan seem to be a team transformed from the HWL semis. There they lost 3-1 & drew 4-4 with Malaysia, but yesterday they won 4-1 against the same opposition. I didn't see the match, but coupled with their 7-0 thrashing of Japan, their results are very impressive so far.

We have to win 2 key matches in this tournament; the semi & final. All other results are irrelevant and it doesn't matter which team has the best scores in the pool games. Unfortunately, our recent record against the 3 top teams is not good. I know we beat Pakistan twice at the Azlan Shah cup with a young team, but when it mattered (CT2012 bronze match and Asia Cup final) we lost to them. We struggle against Malaysia nowadays and Korea usually beat us (often easily).

India beat South Korea 2-0 to move into SF. so we are heading for

India vs Malaysia
Pak vs Korea

Did not see the match but seems Sreejesh was in sublime form saving many chances...

I love it!! Of course, India still need to play the SF against Malaysia -- but, surely, we will win that with ease!!

Not sure about that - Malaysia have quite often been our nemesis. Hope we win it without much hassle this time round!

So, what was it that we had figured out earlier? We still *must* win this to make the world cup, or is there other ways for it to happen? These days I am again quite low on our ability beat Pakistan, though I think we might manage it against Malaysia. Jay

Just pasting Sameerph's post which has latest updates..
sameerph wrote:Spain became the 9th team to qualify for the world cup based on their 5th place finish at hockey world league. Ah, if only we had held on to our lead & won the final match against them at world league, we would have been sitting pretty now & not wait till last minute as we have to do now.

Now, there are 3 places remaining which will usually be filled by continental champions from Asia, Oceania & Africa.

However, in case the continental champions turn out to be one of the qualified teams then that spot will go to the next best ranked team in the world league.

This is the order of the teams who are now reweves for the world cup -

Malaysia: 5th in Johor Bahru / 3rd reserve for World Cup
India: 6th in Rotterdam / 4th reserve for World Cup

Since , either Australia or New Zeland are almost certain to win oceania cup, Malaysia is almost thru. As no African team has qualified, winner of the African continental event will surely qualify.

That leaves everything on the Asia cup - best option is if we win the title, we are thru. Next best option for us is either Korea or Malaysia win the event. In case, Pakistan win, we are out.

So, it seems the last place in world cup is now down between India & Pakistan & will be decided this week. How the mighty have fallen !!! Having to fight between themselves to qualify for world cup.

So, its down to either (1) India winning the cup, or (2) Pakistan losing in either the SF or F (as both Malaysia and Korea have already qualified).

Ideally, I would like India to win it all and for Korea to beat Pakistan in the SF...
