Re: Indian politics
I renamed the existing thread on Politics as U.S. Politics (as a lot of discussions there were about that). I think there are posts from there which I would move here later...
As for the speech, I am sorry, my Hindi is not good enough to understand the really communal parts of the speech. Could somebody give a translation of the really bad lines he said? Thanks.
Jay

See the full speech here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slPdiaAserc .
Jay the first link I posted it just a small part of his hate speech. He said that, there are 25 crore Muslims and 100 crore Hindus in Hindustan and if police stay away for 15 minutes, he will show who has more courage and valor and will finish off all Hindus!!!! Not just that the language he used against Kausalya, Ram's mother and about the naked statues of Ajanta Ellora is highly derogatory.

Re: Indian politics
So the BJP's attempt to crack Bengal did not work. But, I think they showed very little understanding of Bengal in the first place. "Jai Shri Ram" vs "Joy Bangla" or "Bangla Nijjer Mekei Chai" (Want Bangla's Own Daughter) was bound to end like this. Bengalis would not vote for an outsider (Ram) being pushed by outsiders MoSha (Modi-Shah, mosha is mosquito in Bengali) over their own. The only other logic of "good governance" does not cut it because instead of the vaporware that was sold before, now people have real proof of the incompetence of these folks. Anyway, if the BJP wants to win in Bengal, they need to grow a Bengali leader and need to develop some message rather than Ram. For better or for worse, Bengalis love their language and we consider Bangladeshis as Bangalis, which they are, after all. So, some soul-searching is in order. Unless, all this was just a show in the first place and their real target was the Hindi belt and they do not really want to change their message because that would compromise their ability to arouse the Hindu fervor.
p.s. There are actually two threads titled Indian politics. Would a kind mod merge them? Thanks.

Re: Indian politics
Has it really been 8 long years since the last post on this thread?? Wow! That's because Indian politics gets discussed in every other thread! Politics in India gets woven into everything.
BTW, Prasen, I am surprised at how low key you come across talking about BJP's trouncing in West Bengal. I thought that you'd be more exited. I think I am more enthused than you are about the result. I am happy with the results in TN and WB. I hope that it serves as a wake up call to Mod-Shah. I'm surprised that Banerjee herself did not win her seat. May be the electorate was sending a message to both Modi and Banerjee that, "Hey, don't be thinking that you are some King/Queen. We vote for your party, but you better behave like you are serving us, and not acting like you have some sort of automatic right to the throne."
The diversity in India that Atithee was bemoaning on the Hindi imposition thread (for being a stumbling block to progress in India) might be a good thing in politics in that it prevents autocratic megalomaniacs from taking over the whole country - not that I am calling Modi that .
May be it's better to have an ineffective minority or coalition government that accomplishes nothing than a majority government with no effective opposition that bungles things royally trying to do stuff based on its arrogance in having a majority mandate (intention is irrelevant).

Re: Indian politics
I am low key because I am not really a Mamata fan. She is not a competent administrator. TMC folks are thugs just as the CPI(M) folks were. There are of course some (may be quite a few) good people in all these parties. But, the parties are all corrupt and prone to violence. So, there is no joy in my mind. I would possibly have held my nose and voted against the BJP.
In order for the BJP to win in Bengal, they need to provide a clear leader with a clear governance agenda. Mamata will be ripe for the picking the next elections. It is upto the BJP or someone else to provide a good governance alternative instead of just strong-man-ship and Ram Rajya. Or change for the sake of change. It took us a while to kick out the useless leftists. And, what happened? We went from one bunch of idiots to another. A lot of the leftists are now cadres in the BJP fold ...

Re: Indian politics
That was my point in the Covid-19 thread when you accused me of being a "bhakt", but it's ok, I've been called worse.
Who is going to provide good governance? No one. It becomes a choice between Ram Rajya and Not Ram Rajya. Did you see the video from last year where a brave and eloquent IPS officer in UP clearly explained the problem with Indian politics? He said that the solution was to ban anyone with a criminal record from being eligible for standing for public office at any level. IIRC he claimed that something like 40% of all politicians in UP have criminal records, and the rest haven't been charged yet. But he also said that it will never happen because the way the system works political parties actually need, want and welcome those with criminal backgrounds because they are the best in raising money and have the best networks in their respective areas. So it is hopeless structurally right now and there is no easy solution.

Just found the video on YouTube. Not sure if he's an IPS officer, though.

Re: Indian politics
JIC, sorry about using that term.
Yes, the system needs reform. Maybe it will happen. Maybe it will happen incrementally and I am admittedly a bit of a purist. Thanks for the pointers.
I do not know about elsewhere, but in Bengal, these political parties and goondas do not raise money, they extort. If you do not pay, your business is burnt down, your family member is murdered. Sad!

Re: Indian politics
BJP is now the second biggest party in Bengal, so that will be interesting and in TN they opened account went from 0 to 4 seats.

Re: Indian politics
No worries, Prasen. It only stung for 5 secs.
The problem is so entrenched and widespread that I think it will require a massive upheaval to change it. I don't think incremental tinkering will change it.
Exact same situation in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Of course, we hear about how lawless it is in Bihar and UP. I'm sure there are slight variations between the states but it's all rotten.

Re: Indian politics
I am sure that Modi, in his hubris, sees the gains that BJP made in WB (4 to 77?) & TN (0 to 4) as indication of his growing popularity in those regions, rather than a repudiation of his politics.

Re: Indian politics
I think this belongs here, so here goes...
Rahul Gandhi was working from home, you know, as always, because he likes to socialist distance from the pro-illiterate. Anyway, there he was "working" from home, when he received a call from the front gate security. It was the Nepali guard. The conversation happened in Hindi, but I provide the translation here for the Hindi-illiterate.
Guard: Sir, there is someone here to see you.
Rahul: Who is it?
Guard: It is Sharapova.
Rahul: Oh, wow! Ok! Wasn't expecting that. Send them in.
RG runs in to powder his nose and freshen up... he is the Fresh Prince, after all. Then eagerly runs to the front room looking forward to seeing the tall, blonde tennis goddess.... and in walks .... Sharad Pawar!
