Sindhu is at #13 this year, tied with Madison Keys. Top 11 are all tennis players, followed by Alex Morgan (Football), Sindhu (Badminton), Keys, and Ariya Jutanugarn (Golf).
Thanks Jay.
Next year she will be in the top 10! All that world championship winning related money (recent) and of course the sponsorship deals in prep to 2020 Tokyo Olympics will add up.....

You have to be kidding amount the prize money. Prize money in badminton is pretty small. Most of her income is in endorsements. A medal (hopefully a gold) will likely see a surge in her endorsement money next year. I suspect her earnings this year will be similar to last year as she is already seen as someone who competes and wins at the top level in badminton.

Oh, I didn't mean the prize money.... I meant the money & gifts that were announced by all the Govt., political, industrial, movie big shots- after she won the world championship! By last count, it was close to 2 Million USD!! may be more. Well worth every penny of it, to hear the national anthem on a world stage of sports....!!
In BWF world tour finals, defending champion PV Sindhu lost her first 2 matches at group stage - against world #4 Yamaguchi 21-18 18-21 8-21 and today against world #2 Chen Yufei 22-20 16-21 12-21.
With that her title defence has ended. It is getting a bit worrying for Sindhu now. She took the first game against both the players but got completely outplayed in third game. Other that world championships title, it has been a washout year for Sindhu in other torunaments. Needs some confidence boosting wins early next year to get back into frame for Tokyo.
I do not think it is a fitness issue as in the past we have not seen Sindhu run out of steam in 3 game matches. Anyway, She beat 7th ranked He Jiao Bing 21-19 21-19 but it was too late as she had already lost 2 matches. Only if she had pulled out of 1 of the 2 matches she lost she would have been in the semi final. First one against Yamaguchi she lead 11-6 in second game after winning the first game but let it sleep.
Top 4 ranked players actually made the SF. So, looks like here Sindhu played to her ranking of #6 here and not at a higher level as she usually does in bigger events.
Matches among the top players are going to be close. Champions know how to pull out close matches. In this case, both Marin and Sindhu are past champions. Their records are close but on the balance I would possibly take Marin's record. Their head-to-heads are 6-9 in favor of Marin. So, there was a 40% chance of a Sindhu win and a high chance of a close match. That is what happened. She lost.
Carolina is perhaps not Sindhu's worst matchup. That is possibly An Se Young, whom she has not defeated in five tries, TTY and then Ratchanok. Although Sindhu has a much better record in the big occassions overall than both TTY and RI, but her overall record against them are bad. On a % basis, perhaps Sindhu's record against Saina is bad too with a 1-3 record. I think all of Marin, Sindhu, RI, and TTY are in the 27-29 year old range.
Maybe Sindhu sleeps a bit in the regular tournaments and wakes up for the WCs and Olympics, etc. The reverse-choke artist.

This is not a maybe. She has never been world #1 which 3 other of our shuttlers have been (Padukone, Saina, Srikanth) but has been by our most successful athlete at the biggest competitions.
Sindhu's highest ranking was No. 2 which by iteself is not bad. While she has done wonderfully well in the World Championships and Olympics her performance in the tour events doesn't reflect her stature. Saina has won far more tour events than Sindhu. Her lack of consistency prevents her from being called a great.
I would any time take Sindhu's inconsistency as long as it gives medals in big events like olympics, world championships, Asiad which Sindhu has managed. We have forever lamented about our players doing well in lower level tournaments and faltering at bigger events. Here we have a player who is exactly the opposite and we cannot keep lamenting that too.
