Dont know who really is advising him on truancy of tournaments.
Rajiv, I am pretty sure there are some other reasons behind this. Nobody will take 5+ weeks off right after reaching a career-high, dropping direct entries into tour events and all like this, otherwise. Let us leave it at that :(

Hopefully he will get back all healthy and ready to go after 3 weeks in Germany,

My only worry is all of this is going to affect the momentum of Monte Carlo.

^^^ He is not a big momentum guy, and has shown before that he can take time off and get back in good form. I am not worried too much about that. But we really don't know why he is taking 5+ weeks off. The reasons he has given do not make too much sense. He said 2-3 weeks at first, entered tournaments and all that, but suddenly it is 5+ weeks and he is training. I don't really believe that is all there is to it. He has lost a lot of money from skipping Madrid and Rome masters too. It can't be for nothing. So, let us leave it at "he has some reasons he does not want to tell us" :)

Maybe he is secretly marrying his secret girlfriend :D

I'm pretty sure his priority is to be fit for the FO and Wimbledon given the disproportionate rewards for playing the main draw in those events. Therefore, he probably is dealing with something and does not want to aggravate it by playing prematurely. Being "truant" is a strange take given that Sumit is quite a hard-working player.

Taking five weeks off in the middle of the clay season is completely bizarre for a clay specialist like Sumit. There must be some injury issue involved, otherwise this makes absolutely no sense. A real pity!

He is not in the Cagliari list today though. So next week if off for sure. He has not pulled his name from the subsequent week's Rome Masters main draw or qualies just yet.

So whatever is his plan, or whatever is keeping him away from the court, it is a week-to-week thing!

He was in the morning, but I see now that he isn't there. I don't think this is a good thing. He is not 35+ to need so much rest. Last year he was complaining about money and now he has such a good situation he is throwing it away.

^^^ Sanjay, it is probably a physical issue that he is monitoring. He probably doesn't want to talk about it, so let us also not talk about it till he tells us what the deal is. My guess is that he is week-to-week right now, and monitoring some issue. He probably felt that he should see his physios and the doctor who did his hip surgery in Munich earlier, just to make sure that everything is fine - and that is why he is going to Germany to train at the academy, which seems to be a decision made only recently, as he had said it would only be a 2 to 3 week break at first. But at the same time, if anything was too serious he would not have entered Bordeaux etc last week, which is what I find as a bit of a relief. We did not see him showing any injury issue in the last match he played either. So it can't be too serious. Caution is always good in these things, so I assume that is what he is exercising. Just a guess from me, as those who hear from the horse's mouth have all been silent lately. Let us leave it that.

You bet he knows about the money he is losing right now. He can show up and tank a match, to make some $$$ (a few or many thousands), so he is not going to "throw it away" for no reasons! I appreciate that he is withdrawing properly and in a timely manner from events, rather than make it tough for other players and take spots away from them by playing games like some other guys do.

Take it as a week-to-week thing now, and let us not get upset!! But whatever it is, it is unfortunate :(

Yes, if he needs to go in and end up losing a match, at this point it makes sense for him to do it at the French Open. A first round loss there likely pays more than what he would earn playing the other 5 weeks he is missing.

It is possible a niggle that he wants to heal fully. There is no other explanation for his actions.

^^^ I don't know if this is the case, but I agree that it makes the most sense, and probably that is the only guess that makes any sense. He perhaps wants to see if whatever discomfort he felt heals fully, then try hitting with some good players at the Nensel Academy, get some good massages and all that, see if the problem shows signs of returning, talk to the doctor who did his surgery to see what he thinks, do some MRI or whatever needed, etc, and then return to tournament play. It might all be uncertain, and maybe there is no serious issue at all, and so he does not want to tell people and create a hoopla that he is down injured, which is not what he feels. That is probably the scneario that we are under right now.

Again, these are all guesses, so we should just wait, wish him well and look for when he return to court. Hopefully as early as the week after next, at the Rome qualies.

This has to be some injury issue if he is going to miss 3 more weeks as he stated in that article on Times of India.

Nobody in his right mind would miss a chance to play Rome masters where he would be a high seed in qualies and miss out on all the money and instead does training right there in Germany.

Well, overall, I don't think it is good news.
I hope there is nothing serious and he will be back on court. I miss the excitement!

Fully agree that is the likely situation. Otherwise, there is no chance that he would be skipping tournaments (like Masters qualies and ATP main draws) that he has likely spent most of his career dreaming about playing. Grinding through challengers is mainly about getting to this stage....
