She has beaten all players ranked below her. So yes this was expected. Was quite unexpected given our performance. But 2023 till now better than the horror of 2022.

Some ridiculous scheduling by the organizers. After her grueling 2.5h singles match, Rutuja came back to win her QF doubles and now is playing her 3rd match of the day for the doubles SF match. :damn:

Rutuja/Arianne won their SF 6-4 6-1. She will play singles semifinal and doubles final tomorrow. :goodluck:

Great week for Rutuja. By making the SF while seeded 8th, she has by definition out-performed her ranking. AND she has made the doubles final. Nice to see her emerging as the second true pro among the women, alongside her friend Ankita Raina. (Other promising ones need to step up and learn from these two :-) ).

The opponent whom Rutuja beat in QF was 18 year old on the way up. She was ranked #13 in ITF junior rankings last year. So, her ranking lower than Rutuja was a bit of misnomer.

This was a very good win by Rutuja. I suspect Rodinova will be a bit too tough though.

[SF] (8) Rutuja Bhosale (IND,403) l. (3) Arina Rodionova (AUS,293), 16 16

Rutuja is at #367 in live rankings, getting close to the 342 she reached earlier in early 2019. Good to see her make a comeback into the top-375

Yes, Rutuja is beginning to progress again in singles.

She and her partner Hartono who were top seeds also lost in doubles final against second seeds.

Rutuja also lost in the doubles final in straight sets. Overall, a good couple of weeks for her. Hoping the 3rd week in Nottingham goes the same way.

This week Rutuja started with a double bagel win. :D

At Nottingham W25, England (Hard)

[R1] (8) Rutuja Bhosale (IND,403) d. (LL) Elina Popescu (ROM,ITF-1621) 60 60

Next,

[R2] (8) Rutuja Bhosale (IND,403) vs. (Q) Taylah Preston (AUS,725)

Preston is a 17 year ranked #33 in ITF junior rankings and was ranked 10th last year. So, her low WTA rankings may be a misnomer.

"Low ranking" can be called a misnomer, as a wrong designation, I suppose? :D

Google says,

Mis·no·mer. noun
noun: misnomer; plural noun: misnomers

A wrong or inaccurate name or designation.

"morning sickness is a misnomer for many women, since the nausea can occur any time during the day"
"to call this “neighborhood policing” would be a misnomer"

It could also be accurate. A high ranking officer for example refers to someone that is higher in the chain of command. Low ranking could accurately mean as being lower in the relative ranking of tennis players.

Taylah has beaten the likes of Errani, Nara, Stefanini (who’s currently ranked in the top-120), so this match will not be an easy one for Rutuja.

Rutuja won her first W25 level title today in Tunisia. These are her results this week-

At W25 La Marsa, Tunisia (Hard)

[R1] Rutuja Bhosale (IND,386) d. (Q) Fanny Ostlund (SWE,729) 64 36 62
[R2] Rutuja Bhosale (IND,374) d. (3) Nafesa Berberovic (SRB,322), 36 63 64
[QF] Rutuja Bhosale (IND,374) d. Alexandra Vecic (GER,548) 64 46 64
[SF] Rutuja Bhosale (IND,374) d. Sahaja Yamalapalli (IND,440) 36 61 75
[F] Rutuja Bhosale (IND,374) d. (1) Anastatia Gasenova (RUS,267) 06 63 64

All 5 wins in 3 set match and 3 of them including semi final and final after losing the first set. Real gritty performance by Rutuja. With net 45 points to gained , Rutuja will move up to career high ranking of between 315-320.

She has 18 points dropping off in 2 weeks time and another 9 on 10th July. So, will need good performance in next 2 weeks too to maintain that ranking. Only 25-30 points dropping off for rest of the year though. So, good performances in next few months can really propel her to top 300 and better.

Rutuja is ranked 313 (her career high) in singles this week, inching closer to the magic circle of top-300 that only 8 Indian women (6 citizens) have entered in the Open era. In doubles, she is ranked 227, still some way from her career-high of 180 from four years ago (July 2019).

This week she is playing a Futures in the US, apparently having decided to skip the grass season.
