Rutuja took a medical time out after just 3 games and thereafter looked lethargic in the periods of match I saw. So, looks like another injury or niggle for an Indian player. :-(

Sick and tired of these time outs and toilet breaks for anyone. Play if you can or retire if you can’t for any reason.

When did these timeouts/breaks get introduced? I don’t remember them even until 80s?

Edit: I’m researching the history of these breaks now. Here’s an interesting piece. I’ll post more in a general thread as I find them:

In many instances, Toilet Break is part of gamesmanship and misused many a times.

But it was introduced with genuine reasons and with good intentions in order to meet the requirements of the modern game.
Today a player consume's lot of fluids and cocktails of energy supliments between games/sets than what his/her counterparts did couple of decades ago, and all of this puts a pressure on the bladder, especially during winters when you dont sweat much and to overcome that problem the Toilet breaks were introduced.

I didn't expect her to lose that badly to a 20 year old :(
Fangran Tian is not just a 20yo. She is the 2023 NCAA Singles champion hailing from UCLA. I watched her progress while she dominated the SoCal pro series tournaments last year (reaching the last round in 3, winning 2 of them). I would not have expected Rutuja to win this match at all.

Thanks, Dinesh!! Ah, that is where I had heard her name. I was wondering why I felt iffy when I wrote that dismissively about Fangran above. Her junior record and even pro record didn't show me where I had heard of her. It was in college tennis!! She had that dream debut as a freshman last year, with the incredible run to NCAA finals. Mind-boggling actually. These Chinese players these days! Argh.

If you are so mentally fragile that you cannot resume your high levels after a break, then you deserve to lose. I am all for toilet breaks and gamesmanship. Adds to strategy. You need to be able to stop and then to concentrate again if you want to be a top player. The toilet break should be of limited time and only a few breaks every 1-2 hours.

^^^ You can explain this to Aitithee and quote him and not me as it is he who exclaimed, he was sick and tired of these Toilet breaks and why were they introduced, and I was primarily meerly explaining the reasons for this introduction.

Yes, Rajiv. Sorry, I was responding to Atithee's post and not yours per se. Sorry to have quoted the wrong post.

At the ITF W35(+H) at Tauste, ESP (Hard)

[R1] Rutuja Bhosale (IND)/ Fangran Tian (CHN) d. (4) Alexandra Bozovic (AUS)/ Maria Jose Portillo Ramirez (MEX), 63 63
[QF] Rutuja Bhosale (IND)/ Fangran Tian (CHN) d. Silvia Alejo (ESP)/ Andrea Palazon (ESP), 62 62
[SF] Rutuja Bhosale (IND)/ Fangran Tian (CHN) d. (2) Rebeca Pereira (BRA)/ Eva Vedder (NED), 63 75
[F] Rutuja Bhosale (IND)/ Fangran Tian (CHN) d. (3) Alana Parnaby (AUS)/ Victoria Rodriguez (MEX), 62 64

Though she lost to Fangren in the singles QF, they partnered and took the title, upsetting three seeds in straight sets! Congrats!

Congratulations to Rutuja on the doubles title. This moves her up only two slots to 193 (still below her career-high of 180). I presume she had some points to defend this week.
She's nonetheless the India #2 in doubles, behind Prarthana (153) and ahead of Ankita (216).

^^^ I think these points go in only after a week. ITF points go into the total in the same week only for events at or above 50K or something, which may be why she has not moved up in live rankings. I think she will go near 180 a week later, so should show up in live rankings on Monday. I haven't calculated or checked her points table though.

This week Rutuja lost tamely to the same player whom she had beaten in first round last week.

At W50 Palma Del Rio, ESP (Hard)

At the ITF W50 Palma Del Rio, ESP (Hard)

[R1] (1) Rutuja Bhosale (IND)/ Sophie Chang d. Ruth Roura Llaverias (ESP)/ Demi Tran (NED), 75 61
[QF] (1) Rutuja Bhosale (IND)/ Sophie Chang d. Leonie Kung (SUI)/ Vasanti Shinde (IND), 63 62
[SF] (1) Rutuja Bhosale (IND)/ Sophie Chang d. (3) Ekaterina Maklakova (RUS)/ Ekaterina Yashina (RUS), 62 75
so
[F] (1) Rutuja Bhosale (IND)/ Sophie Chang vs Martyna Kubka (POL)/ Lara Salden (BEL)

I think these points go into the point total by this Monday itself, and she will move up to around #184. A title win tomorrow will be enough to go above her career high of 180 to around #175.
