Re: Football: Indian National Team news ...
FIFA has shown what a corrupt institution it is. For two years, there were no elections, etc. They were fine. Now that things are being cleaned up, they find some reason to ban India. Clearly, this is not about free and fair administration of sports but cronies at FIFA fighting for their buddies and cronies in India. FIFA is still FIFA. After all the bribery scandals, supporting dubious human rights countries, etc. one had thought that some cleaning up must have been done, but really no such thing will happen.

^^^ Well-said. The whole system is corrupt to the core. FIFA is still FIFA and deserves all the criticism they get (and shamelessly disregard). Trying to fix this domestically is probably a waste of time.

Re: Football: Indian National Team news ...
Well, we needed to fix things domestically in that AIFF should have elections and some new person elected, etc. The Supreme Court is on the right direction. Let them do something and then you can polish things over that. For example, in cricket, they cleaned up some of the extreme cronies and we have SCG as the director, Laxman, Dravid as the coaches, Shastri not allowed to continue after he was 70 or whatever the age was, etc. Some SC directives, e.g., related to age were a bit too drastic but generally things have been cleaned up. The same will happen with football. Now, if we have someone who can be a good administrator in football and what direction this set of people take is up to debate. But, we need to give them a chance. There is at least some hope of cleaning up. Thanks SC.

^^^ Apparently Bhaichung Bhutia was getting some push to run for president and a lot of people were supporting him. We will see how it goes. FIFA will come around ultimately, but things need to get fixed now, FIFA or not. i.e., I agree with you.

Well, technically speaking, he did ask FIFA in his earlier letter to not suspend AIFF. Underlined in the letter and all that. But like the worm of a politician he is, he wrote the next paragraph that made it crystal-clear that he expects FIFA to suspend India. I am sure he has had informal conversations where he indicated to the right people what he meant by the letter.jayakris wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 4:04 am If he did not wish this to happen, and didn't make it happen, let him write to FIFA and ask them to reconsider the decision - in his capacity as the immediate past president of AIFF which hasn't got a new president yet. If not, we will have to consider him as the one who wanted this. Again, what a worm.

India will be in a three-nation exhibition tournament in Vietnam from next weekend. Will play #159 Singapore on the 24th and #97 Vietnam on the 27th in exhibition matches. I am not seeing much news on this from India though. I believe Vietnam plays Singapore on the 21st and then us on the 27th. I think all matches are in Ho Chi Minh City and the team with most points win the title.

The initial squad of 24 for the Vietnam friendlies trip is announced. Two-day training camp this week in Kolkata to select the final team. Not much of a camp though for the team to get cohesive, but everybody seems to be available. Maybe Stimac will stick to a usual final squad without many surprises.

Re: Football: Indian National Team news ...
Horrible result in the first friendly on Saturday. We tied Singapore 1-1. Was behind on a deflected free kick at the 37th minute and then Ashique Karuniyan scored 5 minutes later to tie it up.
Up next is Vietnam on the 27th. They had easily beaten Singapore 4-0 three days earlier. We will have to play much better to have a chance to beat Vietnam.

Re: Football: Indian National Team news ...
India plays Vietnam (at 5:30 pm IST, Tuesday). A sobering article on how far Vietnam has gone, 12 years after we beat them 3-0 on a Chhetri hat-trick, and how we have hardly gone anywhere all this while - still drawing 1-1 with the likes of Singapore and still waiting for the same "who else" to deliver. Good read.

And India lost 0-3 to Vietnam. We are really going nowhere.

India will meet USA today in the U-17 women's world cup hosted by India. Any chances there?

^^^ I am going to assume that we don't stand a chance at all against USA, but what do I know?
Should we start a thread for the u17 world cup. Not seeing much publicity at all for this in the Indian press, unlike for the men's u17 world cup earlier.
