Hmmm...This is a surprise. Myanmar drew 1-1 with Kyrgyzstan yesterday. Maybe Myanmar has a better team than we expected, or Kyrgyzstan is not that good. Either way, let us try to beat Kyrgyzstan on Tuesday!

So, it's another Thapa. Well we are perhaps better than that at home but we also have a very serious striker problem. All our strikers have come from the northeast in the last two decades or so. We need to seriously mine that area for a few strikers. However much "better" we may be, if we cannot push the ball in the goal, we will struggle.

India beats #94 Kyrgyzstan 2-0! Good win over a higher ranked team.

Very nice!! Sandesh Jhingan our defender scored the first goal in the 35th minute (has he ever scored goals?)... Then "who else" scored in the 83rd minute. We still don't have another scorer though...

Re: Football: Indian National Team news ...
Thanks to beating Myanmar and Kyrgyz Republic, we moved up 5 spots to #101 in the latest FIFA rankings released a couple of days ago. I think that is the highest we have been in the last 4 years or so. We were around #96 when FIFA changed the ranking system and bumped us up for no real reason, and we had slowly fallen to #108 over time. Now we have moved up a bit.

For those wondering, Lebanon is #99 to our #101, just ranked above us among the AFC teams. Mongolia is 183. Vanuatu is 164.

Vanuatu!.... How did they even get in touch? Did they start from 101 and kept asking till someone agreed?
What happens if we lose to Vanuatu?

Re: Football: Indian National Team news ...
In chess, actually, people do not like playing lower-ranked teams. If you lose, you lose a lot of points especially with that much of a points difference (that translates into ranking difference). If you win, you don't get that many. Using ELO Ratings. Which I believe is the basis of football rankings these days. Although they may have adapted the points lost and won a bit in this specific implementation. So, I don't really know what is the point of playing Vanuatu and Mongolia. I think they wanted a four team tournament and for whatever reason could not get anyone better. Anyone knows what is going on here? That is, the logic? Maybe just match practice.

Nothing. We have lost to Guam (170K people) with half of Vanuatu's population. We have also lost to Iceland which has around 370K people. Our football futility is hard to explain. And no the lack of space or popularity of cricket do not explain this level of futility.

We should lose a bunch of points and maybe fall 5-10 places?

Re: Football: Indian National Team news ...
I have bigger worry. It will be a long journey for the team Vanuatu. I tried booking flights. Vanuatu to Melbourne. From Melbourne to Delhi. Delhi to Bhubaneswar. 48 hours for sure.

Re: Football: Indian National Team news ...
I don't know the exact drop but these would likely be considered friendlies which have the lowest weightage relative to WC or WC qualifiers or continental championships etc. So, a loss (or win) would have a relatively small impact...

Thanks. Yes, I have observed that these things move the rankings only slightly. Maybe it was designed such that they don't prevent these friendlies.
