Asian Games 2006, Doha (Dec 1-15)

Post by jayakris »

Time to start the thread ..

The draw for football was announced last week.  India is in group D of 6 groups of 4 .. Iran, HongKong, Maldives are the others in the group.  I assume the 6 group winners and 2 of the second plce teams ill move to the QF after 3 pool matches for each team.

In Kabaddi, India/Japan/Nepal/Iran in group A and Bangladesh/Pakistan/SriLanka/Thailand in the other..

In men's voilleyball, India and Thailand are the only two teams seeded directly into two 5-team final groups.  India is in group-A, awaiting the 4 qualifiers from the round 1  where 13 teams play in 4 groups to decide 8 qualifiers to the final pool round ..

In men's basketball, India has to play a round 1 to qualify among 4 qualifiers in the 2 final groups of 6 each ..  India is in a group with  Macau and Bahrain, and we will need to win that group to qualify to a final group-A with QAT, KOR, JOR, IRI and another qualifier.

In women's basketball, India is in group-A with CHN, JPN, Lebnon - 2 groups there and top two advance to semifinal.

In men's handball, India is in group A with Bahrain, QAT and Macau -- 4 groups of 4 teams each.

In women's handball, we are in group A with KAZ, CHN, UZB .. Two groups of 4 teams each.

India is in all 6 events (team, regu and doubles) of both men's and women's sepaktakraw.

Other team games' draws awaited..

Chess will make it's debut in this Asian Games as a medal sport.

3 gold medals will be at stake in chess with compettions being held for Individual rapid events for Men & Women & mixed team event ( which will include 3 players in each side, 2 men & 1 women.) . Mixed team event will be played using regular time control.

A player is required to participate in both rapid & mixed team events. As a result of this, Vishwanathan Anand has withdrawn as he does not want to play in regular team event.
India is likely to be representated by K.Sasaikaran, P. Harikrishna & Koneru Hampi. Good chance for India to pick up additional medals for India here in spite of Anand's absense.

Toss up between snooker and billiards for Advani

http://www.hindu.com/2006/09/13/stories ... 991800.htm

Pankaj Advani has qualified to represent India in  both snooker and billiards at the Doha Asiad.
Now he is being asked to choose one event. I can't make up my mind whether this is a good idea
or not.

And Pankaj selected Billiards for 'stupid' rule that the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India had put in place a 'one man-one discipline' rule.

Advani to play in billiards at Doha Asian Games

Mens hockey :-

Groupings :-

Group A : Pakistan, Malaysia, Japan, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong.

Group B: India , Korea , China, Oman and Bangladesh

India's schedule :-

Dec 4 - India v Bangladesh
Dec 5 - India v China
Dec 8 - India v Oman
Dec 10 -India v South Korea

Semi finals will be on December 12 & finals on December 14.

Importantly, the first 2 teams will be automatic continental qualifiers for Beijing Olympics instead of 1 last time.

Semi final look easy enough for India on paper . Then , they should ensure to beat whoever they meet in semis ( Pakistan, Malaysia, Japan ) to ensure olympic qualification.

I guess it will be long process if they are not able to qualify here.

In this carom billiards game there are no pockets on this type of billiard table ... The idea is to try to use the white cue ball to hit the other two ... But what makes this interesting is that there is one more rule: Your cue ball must hit at least 3 cushions before striking the last ball.

Little Basic about this game
