Re: Divij Sharan thread

Post by Sunil Yajaman »

Divij has an injury in his playing shoulder for which he is undergoing treatment & rehabilitation. He should be ok in a few more days time before which he would start playing again (hopefully in time for the DSCL). He infact played the last week of Satellites (masters) with pain killers. The Australia events were planned after his good run at the Satellites but his shoulder wouldn't permit him. His plans after DSCL would still depend on how his shoulder reacts but as of now, we have in mind for him, 2 Australian Futures (23 & 30 Oct), then he has the indo Pak Series & then will leave to 4 weeks of Futures in Tunisia. His aim is to raise his ranking around 350 by the end of this year. He has a good team working with him with Arun Kumar, Chief Coach of DLTA taking care of TEnnis, Birbal as a traveling Coach, team of trainers in DLTA, trainer at his GYM, Dr. Chandran who is the Director of Sports Sciences in SAI (under whose medical care he is) & surely the support from AITA & DLTA.

Thanks Sunil.  No good to hear of the injury but good to hear of the planning.  I am not so sure of the team you are talking about (but any dedicated team will do; the worst is not getting advised), but whatever the team is - I already feel better that YOU are keeping an eye on him :)

Do let him know that he can come to California (or NY, or Tulsa, or London, or even Korea :)) and find hosts for physical training stints or coaching or playing .. We need to get this guy to do what he is capable of.

In fact, we need to get AITA to think of sending kids as a group, renting a house somewhere in California (probably the best weather during year-end breaks) and working with some trainers.  Nobody should be too possessive of the players; and release them to do those kinds of things which help (hey, if good results follow, let the team take credit too!)

Great to hear from you again, Sunil (Yajaman), and for the inside story on Divij's plans. Any injury is bad news, but this is a particularly bad time for Divij to be injured, given the great form he was in.

Divij won a triple gold at the Guwahati National Games. He went on to win all his matches without loosing a set. He spearheaded the Delhi team to a victory in the Men's team event before winning the Individual Singles and Doubles Events. These matches would have been good preparation for the Nigerian Futures. Hope he continues the winning streak in Nigeria aswell.

Excellent work continues from Divij, who absolutely deserved to be in the Davis Cup team against Uzbekistan recently (but was inexplicably overlooked). His recent pro tour results and current ranking justified his inclusion, as did (and do) his performances domestically over the past year. He is looking like a fine prospect in both singles and doubles.

I just talked to Divji,  he is excited and ready to go at it in the Nigerian futures.  I also let him know if he is in the United States, England, or Singapore he has people ready to host him if there are tournaments near by.  He was pretty happy to hear that.

At the quarter-finals of the Kuwait F2, Divij Sharan achieved one of the best results of his promising career:

Divij SHARAN (IND) (7) defeated Nicolas TOURTE (FRA) (1) 64 64

Tourte is now ranked 226, and was at a career-best 215 last week. He lost to Harsh Mankad on grass 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 1-6 last year in the Nottingham grass Challenger, and had beaten then-#201 Arvind Parmar the previous week; his biggest win of the past year was probably over Gilles Muller of Luxembourg. So this is a truly superb win for Divij. Sadly, he then went on to lose to the third-seed, also a Frenchman (Oger, what a name!!), in the semifinal. But still a very good week for Divij Sharan in Kuwait. Divij and Navdeep Singh also made the doubles final there, losing 36 26 to Tourte and Oger.

[Edit - For those looking for all results from Divij and others at the KUW futures, they are in the "misc. results for indians abroad" thread, as others were also there - Jay]

Yes, this is the best result for 21 year old Divij overseas ( although he had also reached SF in easier futures in Nigeria in Feb.) &  career best win for him over Tourte.

6 points gained from this week will take him to around 450 in the singles rankings & around 400 in doubles. Arond same time last year , he was ranked in the 900's. That shows the strides he has taken in past year. Now if he gets a bit more consistency in his game , he can take the next step & take his rankings to inside 350-300 shortly.

Exams? At this time of the year? Is he in college somewhere, and are the exams still getting postponed due to student union strikes?

I thought Divij was a professional tennis player, but I suppose he has succumbed to the all-pervasive Indian pressure to concentrate on "studies first". All the more remarkable that he has achieved all that he has as a tennis pro while actually being a part-timer! I'm sure he'll do even better once he can concentrate on his profession full-time!

This is the tragedy of Indian sport. The pressure of studies, diverts your attention and adversely affects your priorities. It was a very good opportunity for Divij to gain some valuable points and improve his ranking. However,he is missing  for the 1st two tournaments. Hopefully he will do well at Delhi.

Divji had tweaked his shoulder, and is currently rehabbing it in Delhi, he tells me it feels a lot better, and he will be heading to the UK for tournaments in about a week.  He has decided to skip training in SPain because he feels he can rehab his shoulder better and play on grass in Delhi.

He's targeting Wimbledon qualies for next year, in terms of where he wants his ranking to be.
