Expected losses but an improved performance by our girls against Chinese girls ... Ankita stretched Lin Zhu to three sets ... Now our girls r playing an important final match against the Filipino girls.

Good fight by Ankita in particular against a player ranked close to 100 .
We must win tomorrow's match as as if we lose relagation play off will be against tougher team mostly Thailand.

Slightly better fight by India against China but overall they have been outplayed thus far. Hopefully, they can beat Philippines who have only one ranked player...

We are tied 1-1 against Philippines after Karman won her match in straight sets while Ankita lost in straight sets.
Doubles will decide the tie.

Ankita and Karman won the doubles tie to win it for us and we stay in group 1 for another year.

Karman stars in victory over Philippines in Fed Cup
NEW DELHI, FEB. 10:
Karman Kaur Thandi won both her singles and doubles matches to help India tame Philippines 2-1 in the last league match of the Fed Cup Asia-Oceania group-1 women’s tennis tournament in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Friday.
The first victory after defeats against top teams like Japan and China helped India avoid the relegation play-off.
‘’Our girls felt the pressure of being the better team today. Japan and China were very strong. Today, we could have won straight but Katharina did not give much chance for Ankita. In doubles, our girls saved a setpoint at 3-5 in the second set, before winning in straight sets. Overall, it was a professional performance. It was a pleasure to captain this team’’, said captain Nandan Bal.
It was a commendable fare by the Indian team which was depleted in the absence of doubles star Sania Mirza who had opted out owing to an injury.
‘’Karman has a big serve which is a weapon and a forehand that she hits like a hammer. But she needs to work on her second serve, because you are only as good as your second serve. The good thing is not only Karman but Ankita, Snehadevi, Riya and a bunch of youngsters back home are likely to take Indian women’s tennis to the next level’’, said Nandan.
Ankita had given a good account of herself in the singles match against China. Nandan felt that Ankita lacked a bit of self belief when the flow was in her favour and opined that more consistent exposure at the higher level would help her get better results.
Host Kazakhstan will play Japan for a berth in the World Group-1 play-off, while Philippines will play Thailand in the relegation play-off from which the loser would move to group-2 in the region.

In the end, India did not miss Sania in this tournament. Against China and Japan, we lost both singles . So, doubles result did not matter and when it mattered against Philippines, our girls won the doubles match.
We need to have 2 singles players ranked inside top 200 to be competitive in this group and perhaps, 2 players in top 100 to have a chance of going thru to world group.
We have some good talent coming up on womens side now. Lets see if they can fulfil this in next few years.

I have a hard time considering this performance as being "a commendable fare." Beating Philippines 2-1 who have only 1 ranked player (ranked in the 500s) is hardly commendable. On the contrary, losing to them would have been an absolutely awful performance.
Yes, we have a lot of junior talent based on junior results but so far the transition to the seniors seems to be missing. Karman had a good junior record and good tennis tools but hasn't done much in her transition at least so far.

Disappointing loss for Ankita Raina in particular against the 552-ranked Filipina (who is half-German). She should have won that match. Ankita showed much more promise in India colours last year -- perhaps inspired a bit more by Sania's presence in the team.

Little too early to post this but since we have some sudden surge in singles from Karman trying to become #1, it might be relevant to discuss.
Delhi will be hosting the Fed Cup Round 1 next February at the RK Khanna Tennis Stadium. I think past 2 years, we were sending a less competent team without the inclusion of younger players purely based on rankings. But this time, we should have at least Pranjala joining Karman (hopefully as #1), Ankita and Prarthana.
Here are our current top-5 players:
Ankita - 283
Karman - 310
Pranjala - 497
Riya - 546
Rutuja - 600
Here are the teams in Group 1 next year with their current rankings. Teams will be divided into 2 groups of 4 with the top teams from each pool advancing to WG II Play-offs.

You are assuming Sania will not play ?
Anyway, competition will be stiff for 1 or 2 spots this time. Karman and Ankita appear certainties. If Sania does not play, the other 2 spots will be up for grabs. Youngsters Pranjala, Zeel, Rutuja, Mahak will be pushing for those spots along with doubles specialist Prarthana.

Our Fed cup team is selected.
It is - Ankita Raina, Karman Kaur Thandi , Pranjala Yadlapalli and Prarthana Thombre. Reserve players - Rutuja Bhosale and Zeel Desai.
No surprises there with our top 3 singles player and best available doubles player. Only among reserves they have gone with Zeel ahead of slightly higher ranked Riya based on promise it seems.
Pranjala is making her debut in fed cup, Karman is playing her second year, Ankita has been there for 4-5 years now while Prarthana was omitted last year but played for a couple of years before that.

The draws have taken place for the Americas, Europe/Africa and Asia/Oceania Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Zone Group I events taking place on 7-10 February.
Asia/Oceania Zone Group I
Group A: Kazakhstan, China, P.R., India, Hong Kong, China
Group B: Chinese Taipei, Japan, Thailand, Korea, Rep.
