India retain Davis Cup team for Korea tie, Fed Cup team announced

New Delhi, Jan 11 (UNI) ..
(Davis Cup news edited out - Jay)

Sania Mirza and Shikha Uberoi were named in the Fed Cup team and AITA would pick other members from among Rushmi Chakraborthi, Ankita Bhambri, Sanaa Bhambri, Isha Lakhani, Poonam Reddy and Parul Gosawami after observing ''their performance in a camp to be organized by AITA and the two ITF 10,000 dollar Women Futures to be held in Delhi and Chennai in the month of March and April 2006 respectively,'' an AITA release said here today.

Seven nations - Australia, Chinese Taipei, India, Korea, New Zealand, Philippines and Uzbekistan -- will compete with each other and the winners will be promoted to the World Group playoffs in July.

Curious that they added Poonam and Parul to the list this time. I don't know the need, considering the quality of the other four (Rushmi, Ankita, Sanaa and Isha) .. I suppose Neha's application to play for India is still in the paperwork stage.

Anyone has info on when the team will meet in India for practice sessions?
When does the team leave for Korea?

Sania is in the entry list at the Family Circle Cup from 8th to 16th April. She will probably have to withdraw....or not?

The good thing is that in all likelihood DD sports will telecast the fed cup. :)

Just saw that Alicia Molik is back in Aussie side although no idea how she will be playing after a long break. The Australians are probably India's toughest opposition.

is that official?
the fed cup site says
'AUSTRALIA
Samantha Stosur, Nicole Pratt, Casey Dell'acqua, Rennae Stubbs
Captain: David Taylor'

thats a tough line-up, considering sania is in poor form and whichever the doubles pairing - it will not have had much practice together. atleast not on the the circuit.

btw, both sania and shikha are listed at the family circle cup. guess they will not play more than 2 matches each.....so no need to withdraw and practice for fedcup....or is there?

Agree with shaili that with her current form (low confidence) Sania's first few matches will be tough for her.
