Cricket Statistics and Trivia
Among the cricketers who have been most unjustly treated by India's selectors has to be Jasu Patel. My mum used to tell me about the 9/69 he took on a turner in Kanpur to destroy the Australians. I always used to think this was a flash-in-the-pan performance on an unusually turning track. In fact, of course, Jasu Patel's big haul was in the FIRST innings of the test (which immediately suggests to me that the "turning track" issue is simply a legacy of the Australians' false propaganda, which came to be accepted by our compliant fans as the gospel truth in these early post-Independence years). Patel also got 5 wickets in the second innings (and 14/124 in the match).
I was always bemused by the fact that he wasn't in the team at all for India's next series -- against Ted Dexter's England in 1961-62 (the series in which Pataudi, Engineer and Prasanna made their debuts), which resulted in the first series victory for India over England (and, to top it off, England had really brought their best side, unlike a decade earlier). Patel finished with a test career bowling average of less than 22 (and a first-class average of 21.7). He should certainly have played more for India. Even if you take out that great performance at Green Park, his test average is 34.2 (not that bad!). And he even took 3/104 in the first innings (and 0/15 in the second) of the last test he played (also the last test of the same series in which he destroyed the Aussies in Kanpur). Prasanna only came into the side in the final test of the series against Dexter's England. Leaving out Patel immediately after his heroics against Australia was blatantly unfair, I think...

Cricket Statistics and Trivia
A couple of interesting articles on Mankad and Roy. Here's one that reminisces about their great partnership (ironically published just last week!):
http://web.mid-day.com/sports/national/ ... 127935.htm
And here's a tribute to Pankaj Roy:
http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/2001 ... 10028p.htm
My father played college/university cricket against and with Pankaj Roy for several years. He says that he hated to field at point or cover when Pankaj was batting because he cracked the ball so hard in that arc. Slips were always preferable! There were quite a few coincidences between Pankaj and Sourav: both share the same highest test score (173) and both were out for 99 in tests (although Sourav was twice out on 99 and once not out 98 in a test-winning knock).
