Sania, who picked 311 points last week in the USD 170,000 Japan Open :kookoo: , has a total of 966.50 WTA points to her credit.
Jaydeep.
btw, almost all papers in india have used the same source and have printed 311 points in their reports today! just goes to show how much they know and how much they care to check....cant they use common sports sense... at this rate sania would have been in top 15 by now :D

18 more points for a first round win. With 28 to drop off this week, -10 for the week.

BTW, have you seen this site at ESPN. It provides the detailed ranking table for the top 100 players.
This, in conjunction with Sania's points in our site should provide us a good database to project.
e.g., one good news is Bovina losing 193 points this week. So, she is sure to be below Sania.

I am not sure if i hve exactly understood the points drop off system.

i jus wanted to kow that in effect does this system punish a player next year for preforming well in a tournament this year?!?!?!

and does the points drop off system also include the quality points gained by a player in a tournament??

It uses 52 weeks to calculate the points (and 17 best tournaments in those weeks). So the moment a point goes out of this 52 week window, it is dropped. This is replaced by either the new points earned in present week, or the points from the 18th best performance of the last 52 weeks.

Edit: When I say 'points', it means both the round points and quality points together.

So this means that the points earned 53 weeks back is automatically striked off and is replaced by the points of the 17 best tournaments played by the player?..hmm..that sounds like a fair enough system!!

Talking bout Elena Bovina losing out on 193 pts at the end of this week..I must say it seems that around this time Elena must have been playing realy well coz in the succeeding weeks she goes on to first lose another 65 points and then a further 200 points.......I am not sure how many more tourneys she is playing this year but it seems that it wil be tough to make up so many points.

Since we do know that by the end of this year Sania is expected to drop off a further 95 points or so(thanx to Dhruv's thread)..I thot to put things in perspective i would make a list of the points that are being dropped by players ranked between 25 and 40 presently till the end of the year....I have mentioned their current ranking points witrhin brackets....

25.Vera Zvonareva=500(1199)
26.Maria Kirilenko=31(1107)
27.Flavia Penetta=66(1104)
28.Elena Bovina=458(1016)
29.Ai Sugiyama=170(1013)
30.Anabel Medina Garrigues=109(1002)
31.SANIA MIRZA=96(966)
32.Silvia Farina Elia=76(963)
33.Shuai Peng=70(952)
34.Gisela Dulko=0!!(950)
35.Anna Chakvetadze=30.5(947)
36.Shinobu Asagoe=33(935)
37.Vera Douchevina=68(864)
38.Klara Koukalova=12(864)
39.Kveta Peschke=208(854)
40.Conchita Martinez=0!!(852)

Ofcourse a few of these playrs coud make up the points they are losing by playing a few more tournaments this year but as for Sania it seems the Thailand Open is her lst tourney for this year.

Sridhar- It seems that you have gotten used to the ranking system quite quickly :)
Nice analysis there.

Now we can safely assume that you'll be a regular poster in this thread ;)
