I think that the crucial ranking number for early 2006 is where Sania can get seeded at Australian Open and not have to play a high seed in the first or second round.

i was surprised to see Sania move upto 31 instead of 32...I guess it's because Silvia Farina Ella may hve been taken out of da list after she announced her retirement......unfortunately by jan 2006 Sania will lose a few points more..so lets jus hope dat she doesnt lose much in terms of ranking and even if she does i hope she manages to regain those places by playin a cupl of events before the A.O.

What is the last date of ranking based on which the australian open seedings are decided? It could well be that though sania loses some points in january, it may not matter for the seeding. can anybody enlighten?

WTA has officially decided to eliminate quality points with effect from 1st January 2006 perhaps to be in tune with ATP. That would mean that a win against no. 1 player or no. 100 would mean tha same no. of points if it is at same stage of tournament. Not quite fair, I think.
I wonder what is the logic behind doing this ?

I do not know whether this is the right thread to discuss this . But I have posted it here sice we are discussing Sania's ranking & her chances to get a seeding at AO. It will be interesting to what will Sania's new ranking after taking off quality points at the start of the new year.

all it does is make it even tougher for a player to move up in the rankings. idiotic if you ask me. they should keep quality points.

I suspect they'll apply the "No Quality Points" rule only to new tournaments. But if they did apply it to old tournaments, Sania would pretty much stay at the same location, dropping one place. Ranking without quality points:

Code: Select all

Very interesting post. Thanks for that. So that suggests that most of the top-50 have some (but not an overwhelming number) of quality points. There is now real depth in women's tennis -- really for the first time in 37 years of the Open era.
