Good luck today, Anju. She has had a rather lukewarm season so far, and I hope she can raise her jumping to near peak levels when it matters. I suspect the cold of Helsinki will be a disadvantage, but Anju has the ability to do well on the big occasion.

Anju had a season best to start her first jump (6.54) which should probably see her safely through the qualifying rounds

She is currently 6th in her group and in Group 'A', there are four athletes in front of her.. If tthe script stays the same, she should be through to finals.. But looks like Medal chances are not that impressive!! :frown:

Superb effort from Anju! To have your season's best performance at the event that matters is a sign of a truly professional athlete. Learning to peak at the right time is of course extremely difficult.
I hope she can leap toward her career-best mark in the final...

Anju qualified for the final with that effort of 6.54 m. But her other 2 jumps were only 6.38 & 6.47.
She qualified as 10th best among 12 qualifiers. Best was Tinnona Medison from USA with 6.83 m.
The field doesn't look as strong as olympics with only Tatyana Kotova of the 3 Russian medalists there are competing here.
The positive side is that Anju is improving every meet & if she can really peaks & performs her best in final there may be a surprise in store.

I was skeptical of Anju making it to the final -- nice to be wrong :-) Given her pre-season form, this is a good performance in itself. The 6.54 was
iwith the wind against her! A medal of any hue would be a pleasant suprise as well. Good luck Anju and give skeptics like me a kick anywhere you choose.

Nice to see Anju in final ... Wasn't sure after knowing her best of the year was 6.48 mtrs ... But medal hopes r out of question .. It would be sweet surprise if she manages to finish in top 6 in the end.

You can never say in Long Jump.....Anju can pull off a PB after the SB and you never know. I am keeping my fingers crossed. In Paris, noone expected her to take the bronze. Good that the expectations are lower this time...... :goodluck: Anjuuuuu

Anju has a real chance to finish high here -- 6th or better would be good (and of course a medal would be just as stunning as last time). Notice that 2 of the top 3 Russians are missing and although several of the heptathletes are competing, the best long jumper among the heptathletes(Carolina Kluft with 6.87) is not.

Anju has the worst Season best among the finalists. So statistically she has little chance. But, when u know u are the underdog, maybe u can relax a bit and that should help Anju come up with a decent jump. I am confident she will have a SB again, as she will do better than 6.54, but for a medal she needs to better her PB.......and go 6.85+
