Chess Olympiad - 2006!!!

Post by viji »

Indian men (Sasi, Hari, Ganguly, Chanda) seemed to have won all four matches against Cyprus!

Can't find out what happenned in the women's matches.
..........................................
Humpy won, Harika drew and Swathi lost making it a draw against Vietnam. The second and the third board was pretty evenly balance, ELO-wise, with India being slightly higher rated.

Indian women play Croatia next in round three. Croatia's highest rated player is at 2243. So India should look for a score of 2.5 or 3.0 against them. There are two heavyweight matches involving teams with perfect scores: France vs China and Lithuania vs Latvia.

Indian men play Mongolia next. Russia is the only team with a perfect score and plays almost perfect Germany at the top. The highest rated Mongolian, Hatanbaatar Bazar, has a rating of 2433 and is their only GM. India needs a 4-0 score

Anand is listed to play the top board for India against Mongolia. Their top-ranked player is playing the fourth board. So Anand plays Batchuluun Cegmed who is a whopping 500 points behind Anand in the ELO ratings.Mary Ann Gomes replaces Swati Ghate who lost yesterday on the third board against Croatia.

Indian men cleaned up Mongolia 4:0.
Harika drew with black. Humpy and Mary Ann, both playing white, won.

What a disastrous start losing 1-3 to 74th ranked Morocco.. With Anand's ordinary performance in second leg, this doesn't portend well for india's chances..

Kumar, Anand didn't play in round two either. So round three was the first round he played in.
Against Morocco, Sasikiran didn't play either. Sasi and Anand have won all the games they have played.

In round 4, Indian men play Hungary and Indian women play Georgia. It is the first real test for the Indian women. Let us see how they do. The Indian men are ranked 17 after round 3 while our women are ranked 9.

Suresh, I am aware that Anand didn't play in first two rounds .. I meant his performance in second leg of the previous tournament. But still India without those two should have taken care of Morroco..

India lost to Hungary 1.5 to 2.5, with Ganguly losing in the last board..

Girls drew with Georgia I presume

Actually India beat Hungary 2.5-1.5 with Ganguly winning on the last board. The men are now 12th.

The women tied Georgia 1.5-1.5 which is a decent result since we had black on two of the three boads. The women are now 15th.

Indian men play China in round 5 and the women play Turkey. Nice win by Ganguly to salvage round 4.

Indian men draw with China -- all four matches ended in draws while the Indian women beat Turkey 2.5-0.5. Harika drew her match while Swati and Humpy won. Our men are now ranked 16 after the disappointing result while our women are ranked 6.

Next up: Our men play Germany and our women play Slovenia.

Indian men beat the Germans 3-1. Anand and Sasi drew their games while Hari & Ganguly won theirs. With a total of 16.5 poitns from 6 rounds they are currently placed at 8th position. Anand's performance so far has been anything but inspiring. His lone win in 4 games was against a player rated 2303. He only managed to draw the rest of his games where all his opponents are rated in mid 2600's. His average rating performance so far is 2661.

Our distaff side is performing a bit above their ranking. They won 2-1 against Slovakia, with Humpy and Harika managing draws and Swathi Ghate delivering the death blow to grab a full point. This win takes their tally to a total of 13 points and places them at 6th.

Indian women play USA next while Indian men play Ukraine.

Yes, Anand has played poorly. I hope playing a top player like Ivanchuk will make him raise his game. Our women are doing well because Swathi Ghate is playing really well (after her loss in the 2nd round) and is playing about 165+ points above her rating. Of Humpy is playing steady as well.

How come Humpy is not playing against USA? She needs a rest tired by one day of playing after the rest day (Friday)? Or is it that India expects defeat even before they started. Even then, points count.
We were lower rated at every board

3.1 WGM Zatonskih Anna 2433 - WGM Harika Dronavalli 2358
3.2 IM Krush Irina 2437 - WGM Swathi Ghate 226
3.3 WGM Goletiani Rusudan 2371 - WIM Gomes Mary Ann 2239

The olympiad server is in shambles. My guess is that Harika (b) drew, and the Ghate and Gomes lost.

Men (Anand, Sasi, Chanda) continue to draw. At least Chanda was playing black a much higher ranked player (Elyanov Pavel, 2665). Let us see what happens at the game between Hari and Sergey Karjakin.
........................................
Hari lost!

Viji, Humpy has played six rounds and the coach may have decided to give her a break. With Swathi playing well -- there is a small chance to steal a draw with the US. However, the odds are in favour of your guess.
