Well, some of our shooters like Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Rhythm Sangwan did not turn up here and others like Rudrankksh Patil, Mehuli Ghosh, Ramita were below their standards in Asian games. One who did well and won a medal was Anish Bhanwala who won a bronze in a very good field.

Asian rifle and pistol shooting championships began in Jakarta, Indonesia today which gives quota places for Paris Olympics.

In the first event, mens 10M Air pistol, gold and silver for India with Varun Tomar and Arjun Singh Cheema. And that means second quota for India in mens 10M Air pistol ( Sarabjeet Singh had won 1 quota earlier) and 14th quota overall in shooting. Varun Tomar had a brilliant score of 586 in qualifications and decent score of 239.6 in the final.

Womens 10M Air Pistol to begin shortly.

Gold and Bronze in womens 10M Air pistol. Esha Singh won the gold with an excellent score of 243.1 in the final ( 578 in qualification). That final score would have mostly got gold in any world level event. Rhythm Sangwan got the bronze.

So, we get our 15th quota in shooting to equal Tokyo tally and there is a lot more time left. Silver and second quota went to Pakistan for whom Kishmala Talat won the bronze. Kishmala had won bronze in Asian games behind Palak and Esha.

India seems to be on a roll in the early days of event leading 4 gold to China's 1 gold. Did China not send their best shooters here?

Looks like China has not sent their pistol team. They have sent their rifle team and our mixed team of Rudranksh Patil and Mehuli Ghosh beat a Chinese team in the final. Not quite sure if they have send their best shooters in rifle.

How many more quota places can we win? Mathematically and realistically? Thanks in advance for those who follow this well and passionately.

Here or in total?

Keep in mind someone like Manu and Esha can and will likely shoot in both the 10m and 25m so we don't need all 4 quotas necessarily.

Theoretically we can still win the maximum possible quota (9 more to bring total to 24), however it's unlikely we will win full quota in shotgun events (trap and skeet), we will likely end up with 19 or 20 quotas.

Today, in womens 10M Air rifle, gold and silver went to India with Nancy and Elanevil winning them and Mehuli Ghosh finished fourth behind a Chinese who won bronze. That was totally dominating show by our womens 10M Air rifle shooters with 5 shooters in top 6 in qualifying.

This is one of the most competitive events for us where there are 5 shooters who can win a medal in a world level field on a given day. Selection of 2 Indians shooters here itself is going to be quite tough.

In mens 10M Air rifle, Rudrankshh Patil won bronze.

Rhythm Sangwan won bronze in womens 25M pistol and won a quota place for us. This is 16th quota place won for us.

Now, we have 3 out 4 possible quota places in womens pistol, we already have 3 out possible quota places in mens pistol and 25M rapid fire pistol is yet to be done in current tournament.

Good to see India closing the gap with China in qualifications. China 19 and India have 16. Inspite of the narrow gap in quota places, we may still not be that good as China when to comes to actual Olympics but having more quota should improve the possibility of at least a medal. So i would expect this contingent not to return empty handed at Paris.

China has earned 15 out of it's 19 earned at the 2 world championships while we have earned 7 at the world championships. So, that mostly indicates that China has more shooters who can shine at world leading events. Still 16 is a pretty good number and we are only third behind China and USA here.

^^
Yes. As you mentioned Chinese shooters have earned most of their quota from quality events. I suspect most of their A-team may be taking time off by not attending this Asian rifle and pistol event and planning to peak in time for Olympics. Not sure if NRAI thinks on those lines to train the shooters to peak at the right time. I guess we don't have that luxury for some events, but they could have done that for the events we already got full quota places.

In the meantime Asian Shotgun events start from tomorrow in Kuwait and we may finally have some break through in those events as competition may be slightly less. Chinese shooters would also be in action there as they haven't got full quota in shotgun.

Gold and silver for us in mens 50M rifle 3 positions today with Akhil Sheron and Aishwaryi Pratap Singh Tomar. We are dominating here with best Chinese not being there.

Tomorrow, mens 25M rapid fire pistol will conclude where we can hope to get 1 more quota and 50M rifle 3 positions women will be held.

It’s great that we are earning these quotas. Do all these quota places change the expected value of Paris Olympics medals in shooting that Sin Hombre and you have been projecting, sameerph?
