Good, solid work from Joshna. Hopefully, in 2-3 years' time India will be in squash where the Malaysians have reached today (or better...).

Asian Squash Championships 2004

Post by PKBasu »

Squash is a sport in which there are relatively few upsets. People generally live up to their rankings/seedings in big events. Champions persist for long periods, as happened at the world level with Geoff Hunt (7 years), then Jahangir Khan (8-10 years) then Jansher Khan (7-8 years).

I wonder what explains this...perhaps the extreme levels of fitness required create a natural pecking order.

Men's team is in scorching form, and has an abundance of talent (4 players to choose the other 2 spots apart from #1 Ritwik). A bit surprising to see the women lose 0-3 to Hong Kong, although our win over Pakistan's women (3-0) was sweet indeed.

Team event -Pool matches:

Men Group B:

CC
PAKISTAN vs INDIA Score
3 Majid Khan bt Manish Chotrani 9/2, 9/1, 9/4 3-0
1 Mansoor Zaman bt Saurav Ghosal 9/3, 9/3, 9/7 3-0
2 Shahid Zaman bt Siddharth Suchde 9/2, 9/5, 9/6 3-0
PAKISTAN BEAT INDIA 3 - 0 :(

Dunno, why Ritwik didn't play today. I think he is reserved for the knock out stage.

Women's:

India finished 2nd behind HKG in Group B and drawn to face Malaysia in the Semi's today. It's a challenging task as Malaysia is the top seed with highly rated players.

In the other semi-finals Hong Kong takes on Japan, an easy task for HKG.

Still a bit bemused by why Ritwik didn't play against Pakistan. Were we resigned to defeat in that encounter?
Siddharth Suchde appears to have made the most progress in recent months...
