I think running has lot of benefits, but also has disadvantages. If you have poor mechanics or shoes, you can cause more long term issues. Further, for tennis players who are already subjecting their knees to lot of impact on hard courts, running on another hard surface seems counter productive. You play soccer/hockey as midfielder or a striker, u are going to easily run 2-3 km every day during scrimmage. Why would you subject them to 10k 4-5 times a week?
As for recreational tennis players? The distances are about the same. In 2020, Fitbit reported that according to their user data, an hour of singles tennis generates around, on average, 10,680 steps, while an hour of doubles tennis generates, on average, 7,980 steps. That’s an equivalent of about 4 to 5 miles of running and 3 to 4 miles respectively depending on your stride length.

I would not do separate long distance running for any of the sports mentioned as all of this athletes will build up lot of endurance just from playing this sport. My endurance level improved dramatically after playing field hockey for an year. If they need to improve their aerobic activity, perform cross training (that does not involving pounding your knees). I would potentially look at swimming as a much better cross training sport for all of the sports mentioned above rather than running ,

@kumar Most the people I give advice to are students at my university. They don't play that often with a fairly long off-season.

While poor running form can lead to injury, running by itself is not high impact unless one is doing non-aerobic running.

@Suresh,i agree what you said probably makes sense when the offseason is long and especially your access to swimming pool is limited. unfortunately for professional athletes, the offseason is relatively shorter and the blanket run 3 km a day from Rohan just seems strange.

I think offseason work out is extremely important for professional athletes. Not sure if indians have access to good off season training programs.

I agree with Kumar in that I would recommend swimming before running. Now putting in 1-2 days of 3-5k running may be okay. But, for world-class athletes, a carefully orchestrated training program based on their weaknesses and strengths should be personalized. So many squats, so many sprints, .. . on one day, swimming on another, maybe running on the next, etc.

They lost in the final.

At the Madrid ATP Masters 1000,

[F] (7) Rohan Bopanna (IND)/ Matthew Ebden (AUS) l. Karen Khachanov (RUS) / Andrey Rublev (RUS) 63 36 3-10

Still Rohan has moved to #11 in live ranking, getting close to top 10, what a turnaround this by Bops in last couple of years, he was close to being dropped out of top 50 only one and half year back when he was ranked #49 in October 2021. It looked like his career was close to getting over than by he has resurrected it superbly now.

He will be 44 next year, not 46. :D

Entry cutoff date is June 10, 2024 ranking after French open next year. So, he will have to continue to perform well and hope to be in top 10 at that time. Then, he can choose a partner of his choice for Paris. Or else we have to hope that one or two out of Yuki-Saki-Bala-Jeevan get into top 50 and Bops remains at around 15-20.

Haha, yeah. My old friend Bops is ancient. Feels like he is 50+, but he is still in his youth, at 43 :)

Let us hope he stays healthy and will pick up big points in the net 8 months with Ebden.

Bops has moved up to #9 in live rankings. If it holds up, it will be the first time in over 7 years that he will be in the top-10. He fell off the top-10 in March 2016 last.

The unique part of this new found form is that he started the year with 4 straight losses and had it continued, the picture would have looked different, in fact was in a perfect position to record a 5th straight loss in Rotterdam, but just barely managed to hold on in the MTB.

Once that R1 losses monkey was off his back , reached that Rotterdam final , and subsequent week pocketed Doha, and then there was no looking back to his revival.

Yes, it will great if it happens. It is not a given though. It depends a lot on performance at ongoing Rome Masters. As per live rankings, there are 5 players below him who can still overtake Bops if they get maximum points at Rome. Basically depends on how Rohan-Ebden pair do in Rome as against 3 pairs of Glasspool-Heliovaara, Pavic-Mektic and Roger-Vasselin-Gonzelez who are doing catching up.

Bops and Ebden started well.

At Rome Masters 1000, Italy (Clay)

[R1] (7) Rohan Bopanna (IND)/ Matthew Ebden (AUS) d. (WC) Federico Arnaboldi (ITA) / Gianmarco Ferrari (ITA) 63 76(6)

Pavic-Metkic and Roger-Vasselin - Gonzalez are out. So, it now between Rohan and Glasspool/ Heliovaara for a position in top 10.

Next,

[R2] (7) Rohan Bopanna (IND)/ Matthew Ebden (AUS) vs. Alex de Minaur (AUS) / Jason Kubler (AUS)

Glasspool-Heliovaara also lost in R16, so now RB is sure to become #9 after next week!
