Highest rankings of all the former Indian players please????

Post by PKBasu »

Other notable ones:

Akshai Misra - 158
Bhanu Nunna - 199 (before turning pro, he was called Nunna Bhanumurthy)
Ashok Amritraj - 201
Joykumar Royappa - 207 (he was the guy Ramesh beat in the National final when he was 16)
Chiradeep Mukherjea - 221 (amateur; never turned pro, as far as I know)
Nandan Bal - 309
Srinath Prahlad - 310
Rohan Bopanna -314
Enrico Piperno -373
Shankar Krishnan -373
Syed Fazaluddin - 396
R. Elangovan - 403
Asif Ismail - 412

No ranking is listed for Gaurav Misra, although I know he played a bit. I accidentally discovered Akshai Misra when searching for Gaurav's record.

Among current players, Prakash Amritraj had a career-high of 220, Harsh Mankad 282 and Sunil Kumar Sipaeya 340 (his rank this week!). The next best rankings attained are by Vinod Sridhar (482) and Vijay Kannan (483).

Chats, I think we've had this conversation before...

You're right, it was the zonal final against Australia in which Jasjit Singh starred:
R1 - J.SINGH (IND) def. B.GILTINAN (AUS)
11-9 9-11 12-10 8-6

In that tie, there was an epic doubles match:
R3 - A.AMRITRAJ / V.AMRITRAJ (IND) def. J.ALEXANDER / C.DIBLEY (AUS)
17-15 6-8 6-3 16-18 6-4

For a long time, this held the record for longest set (and perhaps also the largest number of games in a Davis Cup match). Certainly, with the introduction of tie-breakers, it will be impossible to break the record for the longest set...

What was Narendranath's rank? I remember him beating Nandan Bal once on national tv but never really followed his game much. His name came to mind when the papers interviewed him after Sania's showing (him being her first "real" coach)...I tried google but no luck (didn't look hard I should admit)

Actually, Rohit Rajpal's top singles rank was 524 according to the ATP. He was supposed to be the next great hope from the Britannia Amritraj Tennis (BAT) academy, but never quite made it. (His top doubles rank was 353, but that many others had better rankings in doubles including Mark Ferreira).
Narender Nath never really played seriously on the pro tour. His highest rank was a modest 793.
(These were among names I checked when scouring the ATP site yesterday...).
Bidyut Goswami is one name I had forgotten to check. He would certainly have made the list -- with a career-high ranking of 318 attained in 1974 (although at that time there were many higher-ranked Indians).
If you think of others please let me know...

I had already checked Gaurav Natekar's ranking -- he didn't make the list! Gaurav basically became a doubles specialist (I think he and MB made the Wimbledon junior final, and he and LP won an Asian Games medal), but his highest doubles ranking was 260 and his highest singles rank was 522 (in 1994, when he won a round in the main draw of the Mumbai Challenger -- his only such singles win at the Challenger level I believe).
Zubin Irani I hadn't checked, but his name doesn't show up on ATP's archives.

gbel day , players like gaurav are deliberatly kept out becuse this is primarliy about indians having a decent ranking and having played the Top tier on circuit
because if we take players like gaurav than it would really open flood gates and players like calcuttian jayant rikhye would also come to mind who played for india in the 82 asiad (also to whom in 81 i lost in in qtrs
at a local tourney in bombay)
zubin irani was never much active even on the national scene as far as seniors are concerened , even though he was promising junior and was breifly taken by bat ,
however his sister xenobia was good enough player to play juniors at wimbledon as well perfoming consistentaly on the national circuit.

Yeah, I checked for a lot of peripheral names like Shyam Minotra (just in case some surprises might come up). I don't think too many names have slipped through the cracks...

Please keep "popping out" names, because it is those names that are deep in the recesses of our memory that might throw up a few surprises that we don't remember...
