Saurav Ghoshal thread - PB WR # 10 in Apr 2019

Post by PKBasu »

This 17-year-old from Chennai (original home: 9 Mandeville Gardens, Calcutta) is the British Open Junior champion 2004. The first Indian to achieve the feat. (A few weeks ago, interestingly, Siddharth Suchde -- currently a Harvard student -- beat Saurav on the way to the Scottish Open title; India's squash future appears very bright).
The British Open is the squash equivalent to tennis's Wimbledon. Saurav's achievement is therefore akin to Ramanathan Krishnan's in 1954. Let's hope either Saurav, Siddharth or the current India #1 Ritwik Bhattacharya go on to outdo Ramanathan in the pro ranks....

See the report about the British Junior Open at SquashTalk - a website that seems to know about the sport.

Here is a sample of what the report said about Saurav Ghosal. Read the entire report.

"Ghosal, a small fast-footed 17-year-old from Calcutta, has won only local junior events until now, but has been training with Cyrus Poncha on the new championship courts at Chennai over the past year. He hits the ball with ferocious technically based power and speed for such a slight character and tonight quickly established himself as the dominant force on the court against an opponent of considerably more height and width." (bold character - my emphasis)

India's Ghosal breaks Egyptians, Pakisanis Stranglehold over Medal Podium by Colin McQuilllan for SquashTalk, Jan 6, 2004

Congratulations Saurav and Coach Cyrus!

Sourav's masterful victory in the final suggests he has a bright future in pro squash. But he will probably need to look over his shoulder for Pakistan's Atlas Khan, the under-15 champion. But it will be enthralling to see these young Indian squash players -- Ritwik, Sourav, Siddharth, Joshna -- take on the world over the next decade.

Are you thinking about the world crown?
It has to happen when I am around 23-24. I hope I can crack the top hundred at the end of year and in four years make it to the top 20. I need sponsors.

The World Junior Men's Indiv & Team Championship, Pakistan is scheduled from 17-28 Aug '04.

[3] Farhan Mehboob (PAK) v Bradley Hindle (AUS)
