Abidjan Challengers 50 (Hard court), Ivory Coast, April 2025

Post by sameerph »

2 of our promising players Karan Singh and Aryan Shah are playing 2 weeks of Challenger 50's in Ivory coast. Also more of our players are singles qualifiers and in doubles.

Today, in qualifying Adil Kalyanpur pulled off an upset of second seed and SDPD won his match easily.

[Q1] Adil Kalyanpur (IND,908) d. (2) Damien Wenger (SUI,567) 76(4) 26 64

{Q1] S D Prajwal Dev (IND,745) d. Karol Filar (POL,1094) 62 61

Next,

[Q2] Adil Kalyanpur (IND,908) vs. (11) Dragos Nicolae Cazacu (ROM,840)

[Q2] S D Prajwal Dev (IND,745) vs. (5) Maximus Jones (THA,558)

In main draw,

[R1] Karan Singh (IND,486) vs. Qualifier

[R1] Aryan Shah (IND,469) vs.(5) Ricardas Berankis (LTU,300)

Berankis is a former top 50 player. Not playing at that level now but now every now and than he can play at top 150 or so level. So, a tough one for Aryan.

Good performance by Adil to qualify for main draw here. SDPD lost in Q2.

[Q2] S D Prajwal Dev (IND,745) l. (5) Maximus Jones (THA,558) 67(3) 67(6)

So, in main draw-

[R1] (Q) Adil Kalyanpur (IND,909) vs. (3) Michael Greets (BEL,290)

[R1] Karan Singh (IND,505) vs. (Q) Florent Bax (FRA,460) - Karan has beaten Bax twice last year both in 3 sets

Aryan plays his first round match today in couple of hours from now. Karan and Adil would be playing on Tuesday.

[R1] Aryan Shah (IND,467) vs.(5) Ricardas Berankis (LTU,297) 6-3, 2-6, 4-6

Decent show by Aryan even though he lost. He had 11 break points to his opponents 9 break points, so his opponent played some of the critical points better.

,
I almost watched his match. Tbh, Aryan was poor today and couldn't play the game he played in Indian Tournaments. This is reasonable because he is playing a challenger-level match outside India for the 1st time. It may take time to adapt and play the game according to the conditions. So, next week he should perform well against these players. Berankis was not up to the mark tbh.
Expecting a good performance from Karan Singh!!

I watched first set of the match. Aryan was playing decently but below his best, Berankis was making a lot of errors. Looks like in second and third set, Berankis would have reduced his errors. Anyway, learning experience for Aryan.

Adil lost his R1 match.

[R1] (Q) Adil Kalyanpur (IND,909) l. (3) Michael Greets (BEL,290) 16 36

Karan will play his first round match after some time.

Decent draw for Indians this week.

Btw, the Indians lost to inform players last week as Berankis and Maximus Jones made the finals and Bax lost in the SFs.

Aryan gets his first challenger main draw win.

[R1] Aryan Shah (IND,467) d. (WC) Taha Baadi (MAR,591) 76(5) 62

This is a good win for Aryan against Baadi who had beaten #323 last week.

Aryan's second round opponent to be decided between winner of 6th seed Ergi Kirkin and qualifier Nicolas Jadoun.

That's a nice win for Aryan. One more win will take him to India #2 over Mukund.

[R1] Karan Singh (IND,505) vs. Aleksandre Bakshi (GEO,484) 57 76(3) 00

At 3-3 in the second set, Karan had at least two BPs (at 30-40, and Ad-out) but couldn't convert. 3-4
Each holds for 4-5. Karan serving to stay in the match. Holds after one Deuce. 5-5
Each holds for 6-6 and it goes into a tiebreak.
Minibreak for 1-0 Karan. Given back. 2-1. Another one for 3-1, and again 4-1. 5-1 wow! One given back, 5-2, takes another for 6-2 (set point), 6-3, and Karan takes the second set 7-6(3).
