BWF Tournaments Jan/Feb 2025

Post by rajitghosh »

We have 4 Super events coming up:
Malaysian Open Super 1000
Indian Open Super 750
Indonesia Master Super 500
Thailand Masters Super 300

The Malaysian Open has started and we have a pretty large Indian contingent playing there. SatChi were runners-up last year.

Treesa and Gayatri win easily in the 1st round against a Thai pair.

Treesa and Gayatri are new #9 pair in the world. Highest ever for any Women's Double pair from India. Congrats!

Pretty inconsistent performances by Lakshya appears to be the norm now. He should be in his physical prime, so hopefully he'll find the secret to being more consistent.

I missed Lakshya's match. What kind of errors did he make?

Finally we have Prannoy, Malvika Bansod, SatChi, GayaTree and 2 mixed doubles pairs- Treesa and Dhruv Kapila and Satish Kumar Karunakaran-Aadya Variath who beat another Indian pair in the 2nd round. Bad loss for Ashwini and Tanisha in women's doubles as they were seeded here. Tomorrow barring SatChi all have tough matches. GayaTree meet a Chinese pair who last year were playing with different partners but were ranked higher than GayaTree with their respective partners.

As expected only SatChi progressed. But there were 2 close matches. Prannoy lost 21-23 in the last game to Li Shi Feng of China while GayaTree also lost in 3 games to the Chinese pair losing 19-21 in the 3rd game. Prannoy was coming back after a long lay-off and would have lacked match practice. Hopefully this would help him do well in next week's Indian Open. Same for GayaTree. Sindhu is also back next week.

There are some exciting prospects in women's singles. But in all the other disciplines there are no successors to the current lot.

SatChi lost in the semis. End of the Indian challenge. They were finalists last year. So they'll lose points and drop down the rankings.

They have not done much in the last year either. They won the Asian Championship gold and mixed team bronze too in 2023. In 2022, they were part of the Thomas Cup team that won gold. Bronze in 2022 World Championships. Asian Games gold. Lakshya was part of the Dubai mixed team bronze and the Thomas Cup. He won the silver at the Asiad though. So, not too far off.

The early part of 2024 wasn't bad for them. They won the French Open and Thailand Open and were runner up at the Malaysia Open and India Open. Buat they failed at the Olympics and then Satwik got injured.

bad take. They only did bad at olympics and were injured last half of the year. They have won 7 bwf world tour titles since 2022 and became world no 1 too. Whatever India has achived since 2022, 60-70% credit goes to them.
